For over 25 years, Imperial Oil has been proud to support the Esso Golden Ring Tournament. As Canada's largest and most successful ringette tournament, the Esso Golden Ring will play host to more than 2,500 participants -- teams of all ages, girls and boys who will experience what has become a tradition of fun, sportsmanship and team spirit. It's a tradition that Imperial Oil takes pride in. On behalf of Imperial Oil, our employees and our Esso-branded retailers and associates, I want to congratulate the players, parents, coaches and event organizers for their efforts and enthusiasm in making the Esso Golden Ring tournament a success. Play well, play safe and most importantly have fun. Brad M. Merkel Vice President & General Manager - Fuels Marketing Imperial Oil 2014 Calgary ESSO GOLDEN RING 4 Letter of Welcome On behalf of Ringette Calgary, I'd like to welcome the athletes, coaches, officials and fans to the 28th Annual Esso Golden Ring Tournament. I am sure that you'll find the level of competition and variety of teams unmatched by any other tournament in Canada! First and foremost, I’d like to congratulate the Tournament Committee and the many Calgary Ringette community volunteers. This year’s tournament features over 175 teams with representation from 5 provinces and a total of 338 games. A huge undertaking that would not be possible without the enormous amount of time and energy the volunteers have contributed. I am sure you will agree that they have done an outstanding job. Please take a moment to acknowledge their outstanding contributions by saying 'thank you' when you see them at the rinks. It is important to acknowledge that hosting this first class tournament would not happen without our major sponsor, Imperial Oil Limited, who has provided their unwavering support of ringette in Calgary for over 27 years. Also, a special thanks to our many other sponsors who help make this tournament an overwhelming success. Ringette Calgary would also like to recognize the “Friends First” program. Friends First is a team based campaign, inspired by Hazel Skinner, who teaches young women to be kind, support one another and ‘pay it forward’. Athletes on a team are encouraged to explore what makes them unique, and know that this diversity brings strength to a team. Female athletes are Unique, Beautiful, Confident & Supportive. Recognizing and encouraging these qualities provides a safe environment for a young woman to have the courage to explore her full potential. I cannot think of a better event than the Esso Gold Ring Tournament to promote such a worthwhile and important initiative. Finally, I would like to recognize the NRL teams that will be competing this weekend. Calgary RATH, Edmonton WAM and Atlantic Attack are all here to showcase the very best our sport has to offer. These are elite athletes in every sense of the word. Not only are they highly skilled and dedicated, but they are also amazing role models for our younger athletes. I urge you to take the time to get out and watch one of these games. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. See you at the rink!
