The following season, he played 4th and 5th Grades and was again a member of the 5th Grade premiership side. He started the 2001-02 season in 3rds and moved up to 2nds mid-season, scoring his maiden century for the Club with 114 not out. In both grades, he scored 531 runs at 37.9. In 2002-03, he played almost the full season in 2nds, scoring 467 runs at 38.9, including two centuries with a highest score of 162 not out. He filled in for one match in 1st Grade, making his debut on 9th November 2002 – player #199. In the next two seasons, Matthew scored 843 runs at 24.8 in 1sts. He also scored a century each season in Poidevin-Gray Shield, captaining the side in 2004-05, when the team made the semi- final. He finished his P-G career with 737 runs in 28 matches at an average of 30.7. His breakthrough season in 1st Grade came the next season in 2005-06. After being dropped early in the season, he responded with two digs in 2nds totalling 155 runs, including 116, to earn promotion back to 1sts. He finished with 695 runs at 36.6 in 1sts, including a top score of 155 not out, and a total of 850 runs in 1sts & 2nds at 40.5 with three centuries. Unfortunately, the next two seasons weren’t very productive and he fluctuated between 1sts and 2nds. 2008-09 was the start of a seven-season run where Matthew scored 4631 runs in 1sts at an average of 36.2, with 9 centuries. He took over the captaincy of 1sts late in 2008-09 and the following season, he well and truly led from the front. We won the 1st Grade Limited Overs competition and lost a hard-fought 1st Grade final against St.George. Matthew scored 964 runs in all competitions at an average of 43.8, including scores of 184 in the qualifying final and 166 in the semi-final. We lost another 1st Grade final to St.George in 2012-13, when Matthew (having stood down from the captaincy) scored 876 runs, again averaging 43.8. His performances were rewarded with the James A. Daly Memorial Award for Player of the Season. In 2015-16, he stood down from 1st Grade due to work pressures, but still made a solid contribution in 2nds and 3rds, finishing the season with 623 runs at 44.5 and winning the Ted Cotton Memorial Award for Players’ Player of the Season. After retiring at the end of 2015-16, this season he made a cameo appearance in a Sunday match in 5ths, putting on a masterclass in scoring 197 not out. In all grades for the Club, Matthew has played 324 matches (equal seventh most for the Club) and scored 10449 runs (fourth highest career aggregate) at an average of 34.3 including 19 centuries. He also took 153 catches in all grades (ninth most for the Club). In 1st Grade, he played 203 matches (sixth most for the Club) and scored 6523 runs (third highest career aggregate) at an average of 32.3, with 11 centuries. He captained the Club in 81 matches, including 64 in 1st Grade. He played in three premiership teams and was part of the Club Championship in 2001-02. Matthew played for NSW Under 17s in 2000-01 and NSW Under 19s in 2002-03. He played for NSW 2nd XI and NSW Futures League in 2010-11 and 2011-12. He also served on the management committee for two years from 2011 to 2013. This season, he joined the coaching staff as a batting coach. Matthew’s contribution to Sutherland DCC over a period of 18 years as a player, captain, coach and committeeman has been considerable. He is a most worthy candidate for life membership of the Club and I am delighted to nominate him. He deserves your unanimous support. TOM ICETON NOMINATION OF PHIL WEATHERALL FOR LIFE MEMBERSHIP Phil Weatherall joined Sutherland in 1981-82, when he played AW Green Shield and a few matches in 4ths and 5ths. The following season, he again played AWG, plus 12 matches in 3rds, 4ths and 5ths. He started 1983-84 in 4ths and moved up to 3rds after two matches. On 7th January 1984, he broke the club record for highest score in all grades (held by Norm O’Neill since the Club’s first match in 1965), scoring 173 not out at North Sydney Oval No.2. He went up to 2nds after this and played the last match of the season in 1st Grade, making his debut on 24th March 1984 – player #122. In all grades, he scored 535 runs at an average of 31.5. In 1984-85, Phil was a member of the 3rd Grade team that dominated the season, but unfortunately lost the semi-final. The next two seasons saw him play a mixture of 1sts and 2nds, before he established himself as a regular member of 1st Grade in 1987-88, scoring 413 runs at 25.8 and taking 23 wickets at 28.7.
