Additional commercial growth has sprouted at the southwest end of the city, anchored by the Columbia Mall and Market Place. However, the heart of the Grand Cities is downtown, which spans the Red River. Downtown features a large variety of options and events, from a Farmer’s Market at the Town Square to ꢁne dining. </p><p>4</p><p>2009 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA WOMEN’S HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE </p><p>RALPH ENGELSTAD ARENA </p><p>At center ice, high above center ice, is a Daktronics scoreboard. The eightscreen video scoreboard shows game action, scores from around the country and in-game information. The four top screens are 16’ x 12’, the four bottom screens are 10’ by 12’. The $2 million dollar scoreboard weighs 30,000 pounds. </p><p><strong>RALPH ENGELSTAD ARENA </strong></p><p>The Ralph Engelstad Arena was the most visited tourist destination in the state of North Dakota in 2009, according to Midwest Living magazine’s annual Best of the Midwest issue. With 483,796 visitors annually, Engelstad Arena outranked Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which had long been seen as the state’s main tourist destination. Since it opened in October 2001, the Ralph has had about 3.5 million ticketed visitors. <br>Since opening its doors on Oct. 5, 2001, the new Ralph Engelstad Arena has become widely regarded as arguably the ꢁnest hockey facility in the world. The premiere home to college hockey, the new Engelstad Arena has just about everything. <br>Looking high into the rafters at the north and south ends of the arena, fans will see the symbols of what has created the incredible tradition of the Fighting Sioux hockey program. At the south end, the 14 WCHA Championships banners, and at the north end the seven NCAA Championship banners. This area, located at ice level, between the practice rink and the main ice surface, will allow up to four buses to enter and park at one time. <br>Fans are greeted in the lobby by a pro shop featuring souvenirs of all kinds. Natural light from the two-story high ceiling atrium illuminates the lobby area. <br>The arena was built for fan enjoyment and </p><p>spectacular views of the game. The boards surrounding the rink are a seamless, tapered glass that can ꢃex up to three inches upon impact. Each seat in the rink has excellent site lines, with views of the scoreboard and the entire sheet of ice. <br>The Sioux training room, located directly across from the locker room, includes an exam room where X-rays can be taken. An underwater treadmill is located inside the training room. It can be used for therapy after injury and includes underwater cameras for monitoring a patient’s progress. Interspersed are great historical photos which show the progression of Sioux hockey from 1929 when two games were played to Sept. 1946, when student John C. “Jamie” Jamieson was hired to coach the hockey team and led his 19-player squad to a 7-6-0 record.
