Slow Recovery 4 There are many who would return to cruising tomorrow, but the industry will have to invest in new procedures that will take time to plan and make workable. Arnold Donald CEO and President of Carnival Corporation is quoted as saying “We continue to get bookings and so on. So we’re anxious to go, too. But we only want to do it when the time is right. We can’t just look wholly at cruise.” He added “Our highest responsibility and our top priorities are, and they remain, New Silver Origin compliance, environmental protection and the health and safety and wellbeing 8 of our guests, our crew and the people and the places we go.” Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and its cruise line members have begun creating a new health framework to uphold the safety of guests and prepare for future operations in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. CLIA Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz said the industry was working with medical experts and health authorities internationally to lay a new foundation for the cruise sector as it prepared for its long-term recovery. Year Round Expeditions 10 It is a slow process as there are so many restrictions to overcome around the world dealing with various countries and destinations. It is easier for hotels as they only have to deal with the local health authorities. Also cruising relies on air transport. The suspension of cruise operations is likely to cost Australia more than $1.4 billion in lost economic activity by mid-September and threaten the jobs of more than 4,800 people, according to analysis commissioned by Cruise Lines Celebrity’s 30 Years International Association (CLIA) Australasia. Conducted by economic analysts 12 and forecasters AEC Group, the analysis shows the shutdown has already resulted in an economic loss of almost $500 million to the end of May, which in the absence of the Australian Government’s JobKeeper program would have cost almost 1,700 Australian jobs. It forecasts that if the cruise suspension continues beyond its current date of September 17 and into the summer high- season, the economic loss to Australia would total a further $3.8 billion and place another 13,000 jobs at risk.
