St. Ignatius of Antioch The Fathers of the Church are called fathers because of their leadership in the early Church, especially in defending, expounding, and developing Catholic doctrines. The Church demands four major characteristics to be exhibited in the life and works of an early Church leader to be considered a Father of the Church. These are antiquity, meaning he lived before the eight century; doctrinal orthodoxy; personal sanctity; and approval of the Church. The early Church Fathers are indis- pensable resources for Catholic apologetics. Not only do they provide extrabiblical verification of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, they also provide a great deal of insight into what the early Church believed. Their writings demonstrate that certain Catholic distinctives have been believed from the very beginnings of our Faith. Born in Syria, St. Ignatius of Antioch lived from around 35AD to 107AD. He was the second or third bishop of Antioch after the apostles. Tradition records that he was a disciple of the apostle John. According to Church historian, Eusebius (260-340), Ignatius served as bishop in Antioch for nearly 40 years. This would mean that Ignatius was named bishop of the Church while there were still some of Jesus’ apostles still alive and preaching! Sometime in the year A.D. 107, a sharp persecution of the Church of Christ resulted in his arrest when Ignatius would not deny Christ. According to one of the harsh penal practices of the Roman Empire of the day, the good bishop Ignatius was condemned to death and forced to march to Rome to be delivered up to wild beasts in the arena. On the way to his martyr- dom, he wrote seven letters. Five of these letters were to churches in Asia Minor urging the Christians there to remain faith- ful to God and to obey their superiors. He warns them against heretical doctrines, providing them with the solid truths of the Christian Faith. The sixth letter Ignatius wrote was to Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna. The final letter begs the Christians in Rome not to try to stop his martyrdom. “The only thing I ask of you is to allow me to offer the libation of my blood to God.
