You depart the Fairmont Winnipeg by bus at 1:30 pm. This tour includes the Forks National Historic site, Winnipeg’s historical “ meeting place”, with its unique outdoor historic site and indoor market of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Across the river, you will visit Winnipeg’s French Quarter (St. Boniface) and tour its beautiful St. Boniface Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Western Canada. The Cathedral’s cemetery features the grave of Louis Riel, the famous Metis leader and founder of Manitoba. You’ll also tour the Exchange District, with its exceptional collection of terra cotta and cut stone architecture, Upper Fort Garry Gate, the Legislative Building, the beautiful homes of Wellington Crescent, and Winnipeg’s 393-acre Assiniboine Park where you will have the opportunity to walk through the unique Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, which features bronze sculptures, porcelains, paintings and sketches by celebrated Winnipeg artist, Leo Mol. You will return to the Fairmont Winnipeg by 5:30 pm. You depart the Fairmont Winnipeg at 6:00 pm for one of Canada’s National Historic Sites, The Exchange District. See the office towers, warehouses, banks, hotels, theatres and the architecture of the bustling late 1880’s and early 1900’s. We will stop for a private guided tour of the Manitoba Museum capturing moments in time across Manitoba’s landscape in their nine interpretive galleries. The museum’s new Hudson’s Bay Gallery, hosts a collection of over 10,000 artifacts and written documentation establishing the Museum as an international centre for northwestern North American fur trade research. Following the Museum visit we will continue to the Forks National Historical Site and Marketplace. Located in the heart of Winnipeg at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, this meeting place hosted historical events that span over 6000 years. Depart the Fairmont Winnipeg at 6:00 pm as we leave the city for your tour to the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre. Oak Hammock Marsh is a 36-square km wildlife management area that is one of North America's birding hotspots. It features a restored prairie marsh, aspen-oak bluff, waterfowl lure crops, artesian springs, 30 kilometers of trails, and some of Manitoba's last remaining patches of tall-grass prairie - an endangered habitat. Each season at the marsh offers unique natural beauty and wildlife viewing opportunities of thousands of species of mammals, insects, amphibians and reptiles. You will start in the Interpretive Centre with a 5 minute introductory film, then a 45 minute guided tour of the Centre’s exhibits and followed by a 45 minute guided outdoor canoe tour to see some wildlife. There will be time to visit the Marsh gift shop. Costs per person: $47.00 Canadian Dollars including all taxes (based on a tour minimum of 20 persons) Thursday August 24 - French Canadian Voyageur Evening at Historic Fort Gibraltar – 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm (5 hours) You depart the Fairmont Winnipeg at 6:00 pm for Winnipeg’s French Quarter, St Boniface and Historic Fort Gibraltar. Experience the “ Joie de vivre” of the Voyageurs at this replicated North West Company fur-trading and provisions fort. Your theme evening is set in the early 1800’s. A costumed interpreter will set the stage as we tour the fort with its Blacksmith’s shop, Engagé’s cabin, Trading shop, Fur cabin, Towers and the Palisade. The interpreter will share his knowledge of the historical significance of each building and of the lifestyle of the hardy Voyageurs who lived at or near the post. Following the tour you are invited into the Great Hall of La Maison du Bourgeois for a traditional, delicious French Canadian meal. Following dinner you will be entertained by the incredible skill of a traditional Aboriginal Hoop Dancer. You will then be treated to the high energy of the internationally acclaimed Ensemble Folklorique de la Riviere Rouge as they perform the traditional song and dance of the French-Canadians. At the end of the evening you are transferred back to the Fairmont Winnipeg by 11:00 pm.
