It starts out with a Gospel reading, filled with triumph and victory. Jesus enters his capital city, Jerusalem, to be enthroned King of the Jews. People lay down palms before him, a sign of respect for royalty and recognition that he is the expected Messiah. Yet, in the second Gospel, he is crucified. It isn't that he wasn't enthroned or that he never reigned, rather the manner in which he would rule was something unimaginable! He defeats death through his death. He mounts the cross as his throne. He was the innocent lamb. Satan had no right to touch him. When Jesus was unjustly humiliated by his minions, it was Jesus who then received power, power to open the gates of heaven. Any of us who choose to take the path of the cross, will also now reign with him, leaving the Kingdom of Darkness and entering the Messiah's domain. There is something else to keep in mind. As we hear the story of the passion and death of Jesus, there is the temptation to see it as an overwhelmingly sad story. But actually, it is powerful and moving! It's an expression of the depth of the love of Jesus. One can tell how much one is loved by how much the one who loves, suffers for us. And Jesus didn't just suffer physically. He suffered his people's betrayal, the betrayal of a close friend, Judas, an Apostle. Even St. Peter, the rock, denied him three times to save his neck. These were great emotional wounds. Let us not get so caught up with the suffering that we fail to see the incredible love thus manifested. As St. Paul wrote, "While we were yet sinners, he died for us." Who has ever heard or witnessed something like this. Whose god is like our God! Why are we afraid of anything, with such a triumphant leader, going before us, defeating even death itself! He truly does reign. And that reign for him and for us, begins with the Cross. We are not afraid of it. Fr. Joe SERVICE OF SHADOWS BLESSING OF FOOD Join Bishop Ricken in a service of shadows, a choral Bishop Ricken will bless food for your Easter Celebration tenebrae meditation on the Passion, here at St.
