E-learning (abbreviation of electronic learning) is an electronically supported learning experience obtained by information and communication systems. E-learning is also referred by various names such as web-based learning, online learning, distributed learning, computer- based training, computer-assisted instructions or internet-based learning. The new entrants to the medical institutions have sufficient training in digital world with internet. It has become chief repository A for information which they can get anytime and anywhere. They have to be computer literate and must be in a position to access the internet. The information will widen their knowledge base. The current education provides training to the digital savvy individuals. There is an increased focus on interactive and computer-based learning. Hence this method of training is finding a place along with I traditional learning methodology. Through the network the student can browse a wealth of information, graphs, and pictures. The student can search internet through a tablet computer during presentation of a topic by a speaker, and can grasp the essence. E-learning modality can be synchronous or asynchronous. The former is delivered in real time and the latter enables learning anytime and anywhere. Technology-based learning includes online lectures, web-based tutorials, interactive videos, Power-Point presentation and simulations. People have stopped R visiting libraries to improve their knowledge as they can obtain all information at their finger-tip very quickly. They can obtain information through hand-held mobile (mobile learning or m-learning) within a short span of time. The smartphone and tablet computer application have revolutionized the modern life and learning. Internet provides access to large amount of information on a variety of topics. It allows linking to web sites on a specific subject thus helping to further expand knowledge. The self-motivated student can test his understanding through self-assessment. On the basis of the result, either the person can O undertake the study of difficult portions or feel happy at the result and enhance his confidence. Prominent e-learning educationist, Huw Rees looking at increasing apps of new technology has cautioned the profession to ensure that the information available to modern healthcare professionals is clear, up-to-date, easy accessible, reliable and of high quality. This work has to be supervised by medical educators. There is need to incorporate e- learning methods to a certain extent into the current medical T training programs. They offer increased flexibility and save time. Through internet access the learner gets the information at any time. This method gives more freedom to the learner to work on any project at their own pace. The online-delivered, open access information helps the learner to acquire the knowledge. Some of the Universities in US have introduced massive open online course (MOOC) provider I websites (Coursera, edX) in healthcare related courses. If the teaching is totally carried out on the new technology, the student becomes totally isolated and there is no face-to-face interaction. Traditional medical teaching emphasizes real life patient interaction and the bed side teaching provides this. In coming years, the e-learning methodology involving access to virtual learning environments and other online learning tools will play an important role in medical training. Every one has to be computer D literate. When learning is self-directed and self-motivated, it poses difficulty to assess its influence on the change in behaviour towards a positive side. It should not be concluded that e-learning as a replacement for traditional instructor-led training. It is only a complement to traditional teaching methodology to improve learning strategy. Definitely e-learning has opened a new vista to acquire professional skills. The medical profession is utilizing electronic forms of learning as an innovative teaching technology. Page 3 E The Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine 2019 Oxygen shapes physiology and pathology Thanks to the groundbreaking work of these Nobel Laureates, we know much more about how different oxygen levels regulate fundamental physiological processes. Oxygen sensing allows cells to adapt their metabolism to low oxygen levels: for example, in our muscles during intense exercise. Other examples of adaptive processes controlled by oxygen sensing include the generation of new blood vessels and the production of red blood cells. Our immune system and many other physiological functions are also fine-tuned by the O2-sensing machinery. Oxygen sensing has even The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has awarded the 2019 Nobel been shown to be essential during fetal development for controlling normal blood vessel formation and placenta Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to William G. Kaelin Jr., Sir Peter J. development. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza for their discoveries of how cells Oxygen sensing is central to a large number of diseases sense and adapt to oxygen availability (Figure 2). For example, patients with chronic renal failure often suffer from severe anemia due to William G. Kaelin, Jr. was born in 1957 in New York. He obtained an decreased EPO expression. EPO is produced by cells in M.D. from Duke University, Durham. He did his specialist training in the kidney and is essential for controlling the formation internal medicine and oncology at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, of red blood cells, as explained above.
