Beginner’s Crochet String Bag Tools 1 x 3.5mm crochet hook 4 x 50g ball of hemp yarn (e.g. Rico’s Creative Natur) 1 x darning needle and scissors (a row counter might also be useful) 1. Create a slip knot, then chain 30 stitches. Make a turning chain. 2. Crochet 6 rows in single crochet stitch, making a turning chain at the end of every row. 3. You will now create chains in a lace pattern. Make a turning chain. *Chain 5 stitches and connect to the next stitch with a single crochet stitch.* Repeat * to * to the end. Work 59 more rows, making a chain of 5 stitches at the start of each row (no turning chain). 4. Crochet 6 rows in single crochet stitch, making a turning chain at the end of every row. Both ends of your work will now match. 5. For the strap, make a chain of 100 stitches, connect to the other side of the same rectangle of six rows with a slip stitch. Continue all the way around the outside of the bag in single crochet stitch, which will gather in the sides (approx. 68 stitches). Make another chain of 100 stitches and connect to the other side of that rectangle of 6 rows with a slip stitch. 6. Work 3 more rows in single crochet around the whole of your bag, including both straps, making sure that the straps are not twisted when you first join your round to the bag. 7. Cut your yarn with a tail of 15cm and pull through to secure the last stitch. Using your darning needle, weave the yarn under the ‘v’ shape of the next stitch, then back down through the middle of the last stitch (into the ‘v’ shape). This will create an invisible finish. 8. Weave in all loose ends. Note: if you are working in stripes, do 10 rows of each colour x 6 blocks when you get to step 3 (gold and pink work particularly well).
