Preface The C urrent Population Report series has long been recognized as an important source of demographic information on a wide variety of population-related topics. This Index is the first bibliographic inventory of all Current Population Reports and is designed to provide a ready resource for Federal agencies, Congress, and universities, as well as librarians, scholars, researchers, and the general public. Individual publications are listed sequentially by subject, series number, year covered, area or level of coverage, and title. Supplements to this basic Index will be issued annually. Reports p ublished prior to January 1979 may not be available in printed form. However, copies may be ordered in microfiche or in hard copy from microfiche from Customer Services Section (Publications), Data User Services Division, Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C. 20233. Publications also may be located in Census Depository Libraries and public libraries across the country. Information on Government and Census libraries can also be obtained from the Customer Services Section. Not i ncluded in this Index is Series P-28, a collection of special censuses contracted for by State and local governments. When these governments deem it necessary to request a special census of their area, a reimbursable contract is made with the Bureau of the Census to conduct a local census. A separate sum mary of Special Censuses is published bi-annually, and individual copies of these reports are available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. Research f or this Index was performed by Thelma Hall and Catherine O'Brien, assisted by Betty Cady, Linda Kehm, Mary Jane McCoy, Mary Mundell, and Ruthann Thomas, under the general direction of Johanna Barten, Statistical Information Staff, Population Division. Publication review assistance was provided by Linda Kehm. Generally, statistics for the national population of Negro and other races reflect the demographic and economic characteristics of the Black population, since about 90 percent of the population of Negro and other races is Black.
