Playing more than 9,000 miles away from her native New Zealand, Bryant’s Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) needed only one minute and 58 seconds to score her first collegiate goal. Bird’s unassisted tally, which was blasted from 10 yards out, gave Bryant a 1-0 lead over Delaware in an eventual road setback on Aug. 26. NOT ONE, BUT TWO ROOKIES CONTRIBUTE: Three of Quinnipiac’s six goals in the victory over Holy Cross came courtesy of rookies. Co-NEC Player of the Week Danielle Allan (Riverdale, NJ/Pompton Lakes) scored two of the Bobcats’ first three tallies of the 2011 season. SophomoreKacie McCreesh (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) got into the mix later on, providing the Bobcats’ sixth score of the contest. McCreesh is considered a rookie being that she missed her entire freshman season due to injury. POLLING PLACE: Defending NEC champion Rider topped the league’s preseason coaches’ poll for the second consecutive year, but Garden State rival Monmouth wasn’t far behind. Rider received four first-place votes to finish just ahead of Monmouth, last year’s NEC Tournament runner-up. Quin- nipiac, which pulled in the remaining two first-place nods took third in the summertime survey of the conference’s eight head coaches. The poll has accurately predicted the NEC Tournament champion in each of the past five seasons.
