But none so strange as the story of a small boy named Mowgli. It all began when the silence of the jungle was broken by an unfamiliar sound. [Bagheera hears baby crying, stops and turns to look] It was a sound like one never heard before in this part of the jungle. [Bagheera looks into the basket with baby Mowgli] It was a man-cub. Had I known how deeply I was to be involved, I would have obeyed my first impulse and walked away. [Baby Mowgli stops crying and starts giggling and cooing.] This man-cub would have to have nourishment, and soon. It was many days travel to the nearest man-village and without a mother's care, he would soon perish. Then it occurred to me. [enter Stage RT wolf cubs playing and their mother Raksha.] A family of wolves I knew had been blessed with a litter of cubs [Bagheera watches from the bushes as the wolves see the basket right before the entrance. Baby Mowgli lies silent and Bagheera pushes the basket to make him cry and hides fast. Wolves come out and look at baby Mowgli] There'd be no problem with the mother, thanks to maternal instinct, but I wasn't so sure about Rama, the father. [Rama comes from forest, looks at the man-cub, sees smiling face of Raksha, looks at cute Mowgli again and smiles too. The "My Own Home" theme starts in the background as they carry basket with baby Mowgli into the wolf lair.] {enter Mowgli and wolf cubs: Bagheera on a branch looking at Mowgli} Ten times the rains have come and gone. And I often stopped by to see how Mowgli, the man-cub, was getting along. He was a favorite with all young wolf cubs of the pack. Mowgli: Whoo-whoo-whooo! [Mowgli's Brothers run to him and play at stage right] Wolves: whoo whoo.. owwwwlll.. yip yip. 2 [More wolf play and dance as Village Girl Chorus sing Leader of the Pack] VILLAGE GIRLS – recorded Music [Spoken:] EVIE: Is she really going out with him? [Begin Leader of the Pack Intro Music.] OLIVE: Well, there she is. Let's ask her. LOLA: Shanti, is that MOWGLI's ring you're wearing? MAYA: Mm-hmm EVIE: Gee, it must be great walking with him. Is he picking you up after school today? MAYA: Uh-uh EVIE, LOLA, OLIVE: By the way, where'd you meet him? MAYA:I met him at the jungle stream He turned around and smiled at me You get the picture? All others:(yes, we see) That's when I fell for.. All (the leader of the pack) MAYA: My folks were always putting him down All others: (down, down) They said he came from the wrong side of town All others: (whatcha mean when ya say that he came from the wrong side of town?) MAYA: They told me he was bad But I knew he was sad That's why I fell for All (the leader of the pack) MOTORCYCLE AND TIGER NOISES Bagheera: No man-cub was ever happier. And yet... I knew that someday he would have to go back to his own kind. Then one night, the wolf pack elders and their leader Akela met at Council Rock. Shere Khan, the tiger, had returned to their part of the jungle. This meeting was to change the man-cub's entire future. SOUND: wolf howl – Dim Lights SCENE 2: WOLF COUNCIL [Lights up - Council Rock at stage left] Akela: Shere Khan will surely kill the boy and all who try to protect him. Are we all in agreement as to what must be done? [wolves nod] Now it is my unpleasant duty to tell the boy's father. Rama! Come over here, please. Rama: Yes, Akela? Akela: The Council has reached its decision. The Man-cub can no longer stay with the pack. He must leave at once. Rama: Leave? At Once? Akela: I am sorry, Rama. There is no other way. Rama: But the man-cub is like my own son. Surely he's entitled to the protection of the pack. Akela: Rama, even the strength of the pack is no match for Shere Khan the tiger. Rama: But the boy cannot survive alone in the jungle. Bagheera: Akela, perhaps I can be of help. Akela: You, Bagheera? How? 3 Bagheera: I know of a man-village where he'll be safe. Mowgli and I have taken many walks into the jungle together. I'm sure he'll go with me. Akela: So be it. The panther will take the Man-cub to the man village. Now there's no time to lose. Good luck. Bagheera. (Lights Down Exit Stage RT) SCENE 3: SETTING OUT The Man-Cub Sleeps Tonight {Lights up- Mowgli walking with Bagheera} Mowgli: Bagheera, I'm getting a little sleepy. Shouldn't we start back home? Bagheera: Mowgli, this time we're not going back. I'm taking you to a man-village. Mowgli: But why? Bagheera: Because Shere Khan the tiger has returned to this part of the jungle and he has sworn to kill you. Mowgli: Kill me? But why would he want to do that? Bagheera: He hates man. And Shere Khan is not going to allow you to grow up to become a man. Another hunter with a gun. Mowgli: Uhhhh, we'll just explain him that I'd never do a thing like that. Bagheera: Nonsense! No one explains anything to Shere Khan! Mowgli: Well, maybe so. But I'm not afraid. And besides I—- Bagheera: Now that's enough. We'll spend a night here. Things will look better in the morning. Now come on, up this tree. It's safer up there. Mowgli: Uh, I don't want to go to the man-village. Bagheera: Go on. Up you go. Now, get some sleep. We've got a long journey ahead of us tomorrow. Mowgli: Uh, I wanna stay in the jungle. Bagheera: (chuckles) In the jungle eh.. you wouldn't last one day. [he yawns and lies down to sleep] Mowgli: I am not afraid. I can
