Regiment as officer candidate. 1916 Promotion to Second Lieutenant. 19 19 After World War I he intended to become a forest officer, but eventually followed a call to Join the lOO 000 Men Army. 1925 Fir st Lieutenant. 19 3 1 Captain, transfer to the General Staff. 19 37 Assignment to the operations Section of the Army High Command. 1938 Lieutenant Colonel. 1940 Colonel, and appointment as Chief of the Operations Se ction o f the Army H igh Command. 19 4 1 Major General, 1943 Lieutenant General. 20 July 1944 Wounded during the attempt on H itler's life ana arrested by the Gestapo while still In hospital:/ Suspended from duty with the Army until the end of the war. 1945 - 1948 In US custody. Appeared as a witness during the Nuernberg War Criminal Trials. During confinement he wrote the book "Befehl im Widerstreit" (Command in Conflict).. After his release he became a free-lance writer. 1950 Accepted a call by Chancellor.Adenauer to act as his Military Advisor.. 1957 Promotion to Four-Star General and appointment as Chief of the Armed Forces Staff of the Federal Armed Forces. In this capacity he participated in all meetings of the Military Committee in Chief of Staff Session.
