Sunday 10 January 1993 (The Braer Storm) Weather chart for 1200 UTC on 25 July 2019 General summary The whole of the United Kingdom started wet and windy with heavy rain in places and winds gusting over 60 knots on coasts and hills exposed to the south or southwest wind. By the end of the morning, brighter, colder weather moved into western Scotland and Northern Ireland with sunshine and a few rain and hail showers. During the afternoon, brighter weather spread to the rest of Scotland and parts of northern England. Showers turned increasingly wintry in the north, with a mixture of hail, sleet and snow. The rain turned more showery over Wales and the rest of England during the evening but it remained windy everywhere with gusts between 60 and 70 knots over the Western Isles of Scotland. It was a mild or very mild day nearly everywhere, but temperatures fell sharply during the afternoon in the north. Significant weather event The lowest central pressure was estimated as 914 mb, making it the lowest pressure recorded in the North Atlantic. High tides and gales caused serious flooding and the death of a canoeist in the Strathclyde Region of Scotland. Wintry showers were widespread across Northern Ireland and Scotland bringing down power cables in the Lothian Region. Highest wind speeds below.
