Dr. Jonas is the Chief of Cardiac Surgery and the Co-Director of the Children's National Heart Institute at the Children's National Health System, Washington, DC. Richard A Jonas MD Reflections on a career in congenital cardiac surgery OCTOBER 27, 2020, 3:00- 3:30 PM US EST ABOUT RICHARD JONAS KEYNOTE SPEAKER: RICHARD A JONAS MD OCTOBER 27, 2020, 3:00- 3:30 PM US EST Dr. Jonas joined the staff of Children's National Medical Center in 2004 as the Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery, Co-Director of the Children's Heart Institute and Cohen Funger Professor of Cardiac Surgery. He undertook his general surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne Australia and subsequently his cardiothoracic surgical training at Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and Green Lane Hospital in Auckland New Zealand. After fellowships at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston he was appointed to the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 1984. In 1994 Dr. Jonas was appointed to the William E Ladd Chair of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and became the Cardiovascular Surgeon in Chief at Children's Hospital Boston. Dr. Jonas has an active clinical practice in congenital cardiac surgery. He also maintains his own NIH supported laboratory research program in addition to his administrative responsibilities. He is the author of over 400 peer-reviewed publications and 2 textbooks. In addition to his responsibilities at Children’s Hospital Dr Jonas is a consultant to the FDA and has participated in numerous study sections of the NIH. He has worked with Project Hope for more than 25 years in establishing pediatric heart surgery in Shanghai, China as well as helping with the design and development of the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. In 2005/6 Dr Jonas was the President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and in 2009/10 was President of the Congenital Heart Surgeon’s Society of North America. He was President of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery from 2016-2018. Dr. Saugstad is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Oslo, Norway. He served as a Consultant in Neonatology at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet from 1986 to 2017. Since 2018, Dr Saugstad serves as an adjunct Professor at the Ann and Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago in the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr Saugstad received his MD, PhD degrees from the University of Oslo, completed residency in Pediatrics in 1984 at the Oslo University Hospital where he also started his career as a neonatologist. Dr Saugstad was a research Fellow at the University of Uppsala (1973-74), and the Fogarty Fellow at the University of California, San Diego (1980-81) and a Visiting Research Associate at the University of California San Francisco (1986). During his career, he also served as the Head of the Norwegian Newborn Screening Program and served as the Head of the Department of Women and Child Health.
