Maxwell Street Service for the Lord’s Day Presbyterian Church MSPC November 3, 2019 WE ARE BUILDING FOR EVERYONE Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers and he was best known for his Requiem. Composer-teacher Louis Niedermeyer was so impressed by the nine-year old Fauré that he was belatedly enrolled (free!) at the Ecole de Musique Classique et Religieuse Paris. He stayed there for 11 years. In 1888, after almost 20 year’s labor, Fauré’s Requiem, a radiant masterwork, received its first performance. It wasn’t until he was 50 years old that Fauré’s exceptional talents began to be recognized. WELCOME • Greeting • Announcements • Minute for Stewardship - Madison Cissel We invite you to sign and pass the Fellowship Pad located at the end of your pew during the Prelude and then return it to the center aisle so that you can turn and greet one another during the Passing of the Peace. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE INTRODUCTION PRELUDE ~ Movement I: Introit CALL TO WORSHIP Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. In life and in death we belong to God. Baptized into Christ’s death We live unto Him. Come, let us Worship God! +HYMN 326 ~ For All the Saints vs.1,3, and 5 +CALL TO CONFESSION + PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. We confess that we are indifferent to your will. You call us to proclaim your name, but we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live faithfully, but we are afraid. In your mercy, forgive us. Give us courage to follow in your way, that joined with those from ages past, who have served you with faith, hope, and love, we may inherit the kingdom you promised in Jesus Christ. Hear now our silent prayers to you… • Silent Confession • Assurance of Forgiveness • Gloria - Hymn 581 ~ Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. • Passing the Peace PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Pour out your Spirit upon us, O God; with your Word enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we might live in hope; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. SCRIPTURE READING - Ephesians 2.19-22 So now you are no longer strangers and aliens. Rather, you are fellow citizens with God’s people, and you belong to God’s household. As God’s household, you are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. The whole building is joined together in him, and it grows up into a temple that is dedicated to the Lord. Christ is building you into a place where God lives through the Spirit. This is the written testimony to the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. STEWARDSHIP • Call to Stewardship - Blessed to be a blessing. We believe Maxwell Street exists to bless others, and stewardship is an opportunity to consider what God has given to us to help “deliver the needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper…” (from Ps. 72.10) Your generosity makes the ministry of our congregation possible. There are many ways to give including online, through direct withdrawal from your bank account, and by placing an offering in the plate. This time is an opportunity to reflect upon what you have been given, what you have given, and what God is inviting you to give in the future. Give thanks, for God is good. • II. Offertorium: David Foster, baritone Kyle Hamlin, tenor Emma Scott, soprano Kason Speir, tenor Taylor Wells, mezzo soprano REFLECTION III. Sanctus IV. Pie Jesu V. Agnus Dei VI. Libera me CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER • Invitation to the Table • Prayer of Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. …Therefore we praise you joining our voices with all the people of faith of every time and place who forever sing to the glory of your name: (spoken) …Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory! Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest… …enjoyed by Christians of all times and places. And so in remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves with thanksgiving as a living sacrifice. In union with Christ’s offering for us, we live out the mystery of the faith we proclaim: Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. Spirit of the living God, make us one as we partake of these your gifts to us so we might be in communion with you and one another. As we break bread together, may our eyes be opened to see your glory. As we lift the cup of salvation, may we be strengthened to follow your Way… …in the same unending song of the universe raised by all the saints, Through Christ with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor and praise are yours almighty God, now and forevermore. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer (debts/debtors) • Words of Institution • Communion of the People - This morning, in keeping with the formality of a Requiem Mass, our Elders will be serving Communion to each of you in your pew. Please take a piece of bread, and you may eat the bread as you are served. If you desire a piece of Gluten Free bread, please put your hands in a prayer position and an elder will serve you. When you receive the cup, please hold the cup until all have been served and then we will drink the cup together. • Prayer after Communion - from Revelation 7.9-17 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, crying out with a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen!” +HYMN 836 ~ Abide with Me vs. 1, 3, and 5 +CHARGE +BENEDICTION POSTLUDE VII. In Paradisum Welcome to Worship Welcome to Maxwell Street, a church known for its diversity, inclusion and mission.
