Research has a special role at Rigshospitalet because, as Denmark’s largest university hospital, we have a specific responsibility not only to treat our current patients as well as possible, but also to procure new knowledge that can ensure that the patients of the future constantly benefit from the gains arising from new knowledge in health sciences. Rigshospitalet is collaborating with the Capital Region of Denmark and the University of Copenhagen on infrastructure and joint cross-disciplinary research efforts. Rigshospitalet plays a central role at regional level because we are responsible for more than half of the research taking place in the Region. Rigshospitalet has an overall vision of being Denmark's international hospital and have set the following goals for the research: - All specializations and disciplines at Rigshospitalet produce and publish research of high international quality. - Rigshospitalet has an international environment and a well-developed research infrastructure. - Rigshospitalet maintains a high international level within clinical research and translational medicine. - Rigshospitalet is one of the driving forces in the international research community. - Rigshospitalet create career opportunities that ensure innovation in research. Rigshospitalet has in 2016 initiated work to enhance research at Rigshospitalet. The initiatives fall within the following three areas: - Management and organisation Integration of research and clinical practice - Activities to make research more visible - Better framework for the individual researcher at Rigshospitalet It is expected that the action plan will contribute to making research more clearly incorporated into management at the departments and to ensuring that cross-disciplinary initiatives, cross-cutting cooperation and hospital priorities for research become significantly more visible internally and externally. THE COORDINATING PROFESSORS Rigshospitalet has in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen and SUND appointed coordinating professors in each of the seven clinical centres. - It is important that the coordinating professors and the department management encourage cooperation between centre directors, department management and the research communities at the centre as regards university tasks, including research and training. - The coordinating professor and the centre management should help develop and follow-up on the centre's research strategy and cooperation with the University of Copenhagen. - Collaboratively with the centre management, the coordinating professors should prepare recommendations to establish or prolong internal professorships or externally financed professorships as well as clinical research professorships. - The coordinating professors should be invited to centre management meetings six times annually to discuss hospital cooperation with the University of Copenhagen on university tasks and to discuss research strategy topics and current challenges. APPOINTED PROFESSORS Rigshospitalet wants to create better integration between research and clinical practice at departments. The goal is to enhance research and implementation of research results by incorporating research more clearly in management. The concept of “professors appointed by departments" will therefore be introduced in all departments of the hospital. With the involvement other research personnel at the department, and together with the department management, the professor appointed by the department will set research goals and a professional development strategy for the department, so that these tally with the overall vision of the Region and the hospital. The professor appointed by the department must be ensured influence on decisions concerning research and employment of research personnel (i.e. associate professors, senior house officers, consultants, fellows, etc.). The professor appointed take part in meetings with centre councils and department management as required. The professor appointed by the department and the department management have a special responsibility with regard to: - acting as the academic liaison between the research community and the department management, - the academic and professional development of the department, - initiating and supporting research activity, - implementing and disseminating research results, - drawing up the overall research strategy of the department, - involving the other heads of research and researchers at the department, - taking part in recruitment for positions with wholly or partly research content, - being a member of the board of the department's research funding. RIGSHOSPITALET'S RESEARCH STRATEGY COUNCIL The Research Strategy Council is to enhance Rigshospitalet's overall research position. The Council has an elite focus, and the Council is committed to the hospital perspective. It is to make way for even more possibilities for Rigshospitalet to prioritise and contribute to major research efforts transcending the hospital's centres and specialist areas and/or in cooperation with other hospitals, regions and universities. The Council is also to strengthen Rigshospitalet's ability to incorporate and cooperate with major cross- disciplinary research projects and thereby fully exploit research progress to benefit patients and continued development. The Council is independent of Rigshospitalet's Research Committee, which will continue to manage Rigshospitalet's research funding. The Research Strategy Council may initiate new activities by submitting proposals for Board of Management priorities and/or through external national or international funding. Tasks of the Council - Provide strategic consultancy to the Board of Management and centre management on how Rigshospitalet and the Capital Region of Denmark together can become stronger within research - nationally and internationally. - Submit specific proposals to the Board of Management regarding major cross-disciplinary research efforts and future national and international opportunities so that Rigshospitalet and the Capital Region of Denmark are involved early on. - Provide consultancy and assistance collaboratively with the Research Committee to the Board of Management and centre management in issues regarding the overall action plan for research. - Contribute to strategy preparation in order to procure external research and development funding to Rigshospitalet. Share knowledge about new project opportunities as well as funding and new trends within the foundation and research environment - regionally, nationally and internationally. This work is coordinated with the Contact Committee. - Assess specific proposals and ideas from the hospital regarding major cross-disciplinary research efforts. All employees can make proposals for assessment by the Council on the basis of an unbureaucratic procedure described elsewhere. Proposers will be invited to present their own proposal at a Council meeting. - Support networks and knowledge, and identify opportunities across the strong research communities and strong clinical environments at Rigshospitalet. Members and composition Members of the Council are NOT to represent their own specialist area, own specialist group, own centre or department. However, they are to focus on the hospital perspective in major cross-disciplinary efforts and priorities. The members are to concentrate on the entire spectrum, from basic research to applied clinical research. Forum for Forskning og Innovation Rigshospitalets Forum for Forskning og Innovation er under etablering.
