Richert, who found victory lane in the season opener one year ago, took an immediate lead from his second row starting position. By the third lap, the Durst-Smith-Taggart Competition Gambler was being chased closely by Danny Lasoski as the duo pulled away from the balance of the field. On lap sixteen, as the twosome encountered heavy lapped traffic, Lasoski bounced into Richert and performed a complete loop. Lasoski was able to continue, but had fallen too far back to mount a threat at the checkereds. Following Richert and Lasoski across the line were Danny Young, Jeff Tuttle, Ray Lipsey and Glenn Berkner. Rod Henderson, Jon Barger, Gordy Vogelaar and Wayne Redmond rounded out the top ten finishers. Mike Twedt captured the season opening limited sprint feature event as he drove to a commanding lead to take the win by half a lap. Walt Esch, Craig Agan, Mike Chadd and Matt Fox formed the top five finishers. 410 Results Time Trials (Qualifying Order): 1. 5, Danny Lasoski, Dover, MO (8) 16.780; 2. 1, Jeff Tuttle, West Des Moines, IA (34) 16.794; 3. 45, Ray Lipsey, Lincoln, NE (26) 16.879; 4. 7x, Terry McCarl, Des Moines, IA (17) 16.910; 5. 1x, Jerry Richert Jr., Forest Lake, MN (7) 17.013; 6. 47, Mackie Heimbaugh, Des Moines, IA (11) 17.059; 7. 6m, Tim Monson, Lakefield, MN (33) 17.074; 8. 21B, Glenn Berkner, Sleepy Eye, MN (19) 17.115; 9. 23, Greg Wooley, Oklahoma City, OK (31) 17.184; 10. 5T, Ron Sallman, Indianola, IA (5) 17.298; 11. 39, Bob White, West Des Moines, IA (25) 17.298; 12. 3Y, Danny Young, Des Moines, IA (3) 17.320; 13. 83, Rod Henderson, Beresford, SD (18) 17.423; 14. 7, Randy Smith, Mount Ayr, IA (4) 17.432; 15. 2V, Randy Babcock, Knoxville, IA (20) 17.443; 16. 17J, Jon Barger, Wentworth, SD (12) 17.472; 17. 21, Mark Shaffer, Newton, IA (22) 17.473; 18. 14, John Sernett, Bloomington, MN (13) 17.506; 19. 99, Gordy Vogelaar, Worthington, MN (29) 17.699; 20. 2x, Bruce Moore, Moline, IL (15) 17.790; 21. 61, Wayne Redmond, Fort Dodge, IA (10) 17.815; 22. 80, Mike Houseman, Des Moines, IA (27) 17.834; 23. 96, Tom Whiting, Cedar Rapids, IA (2) 17.900; 24. 2, Galen Martin, Fairfield, IA (9) 18.166; 25. 19, Bob Weuve, Newton, IA (24) 18.173; 26. 18, Fran Bruns, Madison, SD (28) 18.264; 27. 4v, Kenny McCarl, Des Moines, IA (14) 18.333; 28. 52B, Jordan Albaugh, Johnston, IA (1) 18.562; 29. 55K, Joe Kouba, Circle Pines, MN (23) 18.714; 30. 14R, Randy Rosenboom, Rock Rapids, IA (32) 19.110; 31. 8, Butch Hanssen, Sioux Falls, SD (6) 19.279; 32. 49, John Hall, Marion, IA (21) 19.300; 33. 69K, Stan Stewart, Fremont, NE (30) 20.079; 34. 4, John Greenwood, Des Moines, IA (16) 21.001. It was the first WoO show of the year for Swindell and the Harold Annett/TMC/Challenge crew who were in Iowa to pick up a new engine. A night of track records was in store for the large crowd in attendance as new marks were set at every distance contested during this eleventh annual WoO Spring Opener preliminary qualifier. Swindell used his new powerplant to lower the time trial mark to 16.211 and additionally set a new ten mile standard during his feature event run. Faster records were set at 5, 8 and 12 lap distances. Jac Haudenschild was the early pacesetter from his front row starting berth in the feature event with the Swindell Brothers in tow. Sammy got by Jeff on the fourth circuit and used a low side pass in turn two of the ninth lap to dispose of Haudenschild. With near perfect track conditions, the current USA points leader set sail on the half-mile oval.
