Biodiversity/Environment management challenges in BiH • disbalanced Social aspect Environmental Economic aspect aspect Biodiversity/Environment management challenges in BiH State Entity Canton, local level “Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative • UNEP & UNDP joint initiative • Title: Enhancing Systematic Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Assessment of Conservation Status of the Mountain Prenj Herpetofauna • Budget: Seed funding “Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative • Focus location: Mountain Prenj • Prenj - mountain range in the Dinaric Alps of southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in eastern Herzegovina (near Mostar). “Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative Three Project Components: • Research and inventarisation of Mountain Prenj herpetofauna and PC 1 ornithofauna • Innovative tools and evidence- based policy solutions for PC 2 nature conservation in BiH • Empowerment of local and national stakeholders to play an active role in PC 3 protection, management and monitoring of biodiversity in BiH “Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative Long-term project goal • improved conservation status of Mount. Prenj herpetofanual and ornithofaunal species, supported by a functioning system for biodiversity management and monitoring in Bosnia and Herzegovina “Conservation Management and Biodiversity Monitoring in BiH” Initiative Short-term project goal • Verified list of habitats and species of the herpetofauna and ornithofauna followed with database • Obtain a final and confirmed list of habitats and species of the Prenj ornithofauna and herpetofauna, in oder to apply the IUCN Red List • Strengthening national knowledge systems • Capacity development of decision makers and other key stakeholders • Link conservation efforts with sustainable livelihoods in the area of mount Prenj KARST project • ”Integrating karst peatlands conservation into key economic sectors” • Duration: 07/2009 - 05/2013 • Budget: 950,000.00 USD (GEF) • Implementation location: Canton 10, three Municipalities – Livno, Bosansko Grahovo, Tomislavgrad General goal • Strengthening the long-term preservation of internationally significant karst systems in BiH • Provide example for their preservation in the entire region • Strengthening the policy framework and regulations of spatial planning on cantonal level • Micro-level impact Results map Raising government awareness local population Pro- Improving Policy level and biodiversity livelihoods capacity businesses building • Contributions to planning • Tangible contributions to sectors Field work Monitoring (NGOs) Concrete results -raising awareness- • 15 representative from local government -Slovakian experiences on peatland protection and sustainable development (knowledge increase) • Equipment and software provided for 7 communal inspectors and officers in Livanjsko polje (all in the function of the spatial plan development and mapping of natural resources) • 12 media WS - tools and techniques - media campaign -aspect of preserving natural values (great promotion of the field) Concrete results -raising awareness- • 8.592 students - raising awareness campaign –biodiversity values • 40 participants -sessions on cantonal and municipal spatial planning and protection of biodiversity - concrete recommendations for improved status + advocacy • 7 cantonal inspectors and communal officers – training on rare and endangered species of birds and plants in LP Concrete results -improving livelihoods- Micro-capital projects: • Bosansko Grahovo - handicrafts, • Possibilities for commercial breeding of white- clawed crayfish in river Sturba • Promotion of beekeeping in Canton 10 • Institutional protection of Livno wild horses • Improving gastro offer of the area through protected autochthonous products improvement – Livanjski sir/cheese. • Employement of returnees and women Concrete results -policy level and capacity building- • Hydro-ecological study of Livanjsko polje • Peatland rehabilitation project preparation & submission • Contribution to the Cantonal spatial plan Developed orginal documents and 8 maps on most valuable aspects of biodiversity,: • Zones for water protection, • Comparative maps of current use with map of biodiversity values • Integral proposal for spatial plan • SWOT analysis for land use, analysis of potential impacts of climate changes • Development trends and steps forward • Cantonal and municipal inspectors - institutional and concrete protection of natural values. • Holding local informative session of cross-border management of water resources • Create initiatives and promote international formal agreement (Croatia – BiH) Concrete results -field work and monitoring- First training for government officers in bird monitoring (on Education Cantonal level) First guidebook on Popularization! monitoring Equipment and resources Conclusion • Importance of KARST fields and Livanjsko Polje • Utilization of positive practices resulted from KARST project into other projects (from maps to human resources) • Ensure rehabilitation of the peatland & inspection • Continuing to monitor bird and indicator plant species population • Advocating maximum inclusion of products created within KARST project into spatial plans on cantonal and municipal level THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION! +387 33 293 487 +387 62 334 096 [email protected] www.undp.ba .
