The wizards on TV throw together disparate foods that no one would think could result in a edible combination, but something must be working „cause they‟re on TV and we‟re at home watching. Miller, in his ninth year as UW-W‟s head coach, has already amassed 192 wins. But he never had to throw out the old recipe and face such an empty page before. When Miller and assistant Todd Skrivseth looked at their practices in October he must have felt like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, wondering “who are these guys”. Despite a preseason rank of thirteen in the national poll, and the obvious compliment to his ability to build a team, Miller had just one starter back from last year‟s 23-6 team. What‟s more, that starter didn‟t score in double figures or lead the team in any category. But what a difference a year makes. Senior center Dustin Mitchell, “the man” early and often for the Warhawks, has rolled up eleven double-doubles while averaging 18.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and shooting 63% from the floor. His steady progression through four years has led Mitchell to the number one spot in the Warhawk record book with 997 career rebounds. Miller reached into his recruiting shelves, mixed in some practice time, and found a mix of talent to surround Mitchell. You would never know that starting guard Nolan Free is a freshman. Backcourt mates Dupree Fletcher (12.2 points), D.J. Dantzler (11.3) points come off the bench to provide instant offense and an up- tempo game. Phil Negri, the Warhawk point guard, is already tenth in the UW-W record book for season assists and he leads the team in steals. Like Free, he‟s a guy you don‟t no- tice unless you watch game film. Dustin Mitchell Even with a talented cast on the perimeter, Miller had to find some help underneath. With a total of twelve games played last year, Alex Edmunds and Mike Bendall have found a home in the starting lineup. Edmunds, a sophomore, is averaging 7.7 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 60% from the floor. Bendall‟s marks are 10.3 points and 5.0 rebounds, but he is also selective with a 52% field goal percentage. The late season addition of Chris Vines, coming back from an injury, provides a versatile big guard/small forward flavor to the mix. Maybe the preseason prognosticators were right: they knew Miller would find a way to get UW-W to 23-4 and a WIAC title. And maybe they‟re just fans of the Food Network.
