Vol. 13 No. 7 Aug 2016 Message from Chairman Dear Members, Season’s Greetings Welcome to the August edition of the newsletter. A review of the student branches has been taken up by Dr. Elangovan and Mr. Mohan, which I request you all to pay attention. Students are the pillars of IEEE. It is necessary for all members to support student activities in some form or the other. While every effort is taken up by Dr. Elangovan to revive student branches which are not active, it is not his responsibility alone. It is the collective duty of all of us to support him to rejuvenate student branches. My request to all of you is to identify dormant student branches near your work place and take up supporting them in their activities. Student activities are unlimited. Sky is the limit. This may sound as a repetition but I really would like to emphasize this once again. Instead of conducting routine student activities like workshops, seminars and conferences, try some innovation – say take up developing apps where in one could collect info on the weddings taking place in a locality and identifying the amount food that is going unused, which could be linked with poor homes for distribution among the needy. One could also take up volunteering activity among youngsters who may like to spend their birthdays or wedding anniversaries with the needy and downtrodden at old age homes and orphanages. Please understand that many of us are living in real luxury and it is not due to ones brains or ability. It is due to providence and for those who are believers due to grace of God. Hence it is our responsibility to give back to those who are not so well bestowed like us. Hence my suggestion is to identify some projects which are of social relevance. Many households have aged couple living alone without children abroad or far away. Some apps could be developed to support in terms of daily chores and also support in case of emergency. Simple apps developed could be made active and taught to them with simple operations so that they can use it on emergency. The app being set so that a nearby hospital attached could assist in taking them to hospital. These are only some tips. Please innovate and come up with new programs. As you are aware the IEEE Day will be celebrated in our Section during Oct 2016. While we will be coming with a programme schedule, to make it more relevant to your needs, please send us your suggestions and events to be included in the IEEE Day celebrations. Wish you all the best Till next time, Yours voluntarily M A Atmanand Chairman, IEEE Madras Section IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 13 No.7 Aug 2016 Page 1 Message from the Editors Prashant R Nair H.R. Mohan Editor Chief Editor [email protected] [email protected] Dear Readers, This issue is abuzz with multifarious professional activities on account of the resuming of academic session in all colleges and universities. We have included 32 college-level reports on activities which were held at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam; Dr. NGP Institute of Technology, Coimbatore; Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering, Tiruchendur; Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, Erode; IFET College of Engineering, Villupuram;Jansons Institute of Technology, Coimbatore; Jeppiar Engineering College, Chennai; Jeppiar Institute of Technology, Chennai; Kalasalingam University, Krishnakoil; Karpagam College of Engineering, Coimbatore; Karunya University, Coimbatore; Kings College of Engineering, Pudukottai; Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem; Kongu Engineering College, Erode; KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore; KSR College of Technology, Tiruchengode; M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering, Karur; National Engineering College, Kovilpatti; Panimalar Institute of Technology, Chennai; Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai; RMK Engineering College, Chennai; SA Engineering College, Chennai; Sri Sairam Engineering College, Chennai; Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore; Sona College of Technology, Salem; Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College, Coimbatore; SSN College of Engineering, Chennai; St Joseph Institute of Technology, Chennai; St Joseph College of Engineering, Chennai;St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering, Kanyakumari; SVS College of Engineering, Coimbatore and Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai. While this is an encouraging trend that IEEE Student Branches (SBs) are reporting their activities regularly, we note that most of the above-mentioned institutions are 'regulars' in terms of sending reports. We reiterate the need to all IEEE SBs to project and showcase their activities. As mentioned earlier, reporting in MAS LINK is tied to various awards, incentives and benefits. At this juncture, we need to spread the word among the academic community of the benefits of IEEE membership and IEEE SB membership. Over 550 institutions are running engineering programmes in Tamil Nadu and the number of active IEEE SBs is perhaps less than 100. This number has to change and we need to embark on a membership drive and sign-up all colleges without IEEE SBs as also revive the dormant and inactive ones. With many institutions finding the going tough to attract students and more than one lakh engineering seats lying vacant in the state, IEEE SB activities, achievements and awards are yet another avenue to improve visibility and reputation of the institution and get 'brownie' points for accreditation, ranking or affiliation. The newsletter also carries brief reports on activities of chapters and affinity groups such as SIGHT, Control System Society, Computational Intelligence Society, Information Society and Young Professionals. We had compiled and presented a number of announcements which would interest the members and SBs to gain maximum from IEEE and its offerings We are sure that members will find the references included in our regular column ”Information Resources” useful. We look for contributions from all to make the MAS LINK a sought after publication from the Section. The membership rates for the year 2017 have been announced. The new membership and renewals are open now. September is the right time for enrolling as new member since by paying for 12 months one can enjoy the member benefits for 16 months – till Dec 2017. SBCs are requested to encourage students to enrol as members and get benefited. Professional members, pl. enrol your peers and friends and get “recruiter awards” under the Member-Get- a-Member programme.
