Shrub to 5 m or sometimes recorded as small tree to 10 m. Leaves Leaves opposite and simple. Stipules present, falling off early (caducous). Petioles 3-6 mm long, young petioles ± channelled on the upper surface. Leaf blade oblong-oblanceolate, oblong-elliptic or narrowly elliptic, 2.7-14 cm long, 0.4-2 cm wide, base attenuate or cuneate, margins entire or crenate, apex acute or obtuse. Leaves glabrous. Young leaf bearing twigs four-angled. Midrib slightly raised on the upper surface. Lateral veins forming loops inside the blade margin. Flowers Fruit and leaves. CC-BY: APII, ANBG Inflorescence an axillary dichasial cyme. Flowers unisexual and plant dioecious, actinomorphic, 4 -merous. Sepals free or fused only at the base, entire, shorter than petals, broadly depressed ovate, green to yellow. Petals free, c. 2.5 mm long, ovate, green to yellow. Male flowers with 4 stamens on edge of disc, alternating with petals; female flowers with ovary in disc and with 4 staminodes on edge of disc alternating with petals. Ovary superior, locules 2. Fruit Fruit a fleshy drupe, ovoid or ellipsoidal, 9-15 mm long, 4-9 mm diam. Mature fruit with orange-red fleshy outer layer or exocarp. Endocarp stone like containing 1 seed. Seedlings Features not available. Distribution and Ecology Endemic to Australia, occurs in CEQ and southwards as far as Narrabi in New South Wales. Grows in dry rain forest and vine thicket communities. Natural History & Notes Distinguished from the other variety in this species Elaeodendron australe var. australe by the narrower leaves; 15-50 mm wide (length c. 1.5-3.5 times the breadth) in E. australe var. australe compared with 5-20 mm wide (length over 4 and often 8-10 times the breadth) in E. australe var. integrifolium.
