Lecture on The Late Period the 28th & 29th Dynasties The 28th Dynasty The grandson of Amyrtaeus, who bore the same name as his grandfather, led the country into open revolt and in the same year that Darius II died, Amyrtaeus had declared himself king and founded the 28th Dynasty. The Twenty-Eighth Dynasty consisted of a single king, Amyrtaeus, prince of Sais, who rebelled against the Persians. He left no monuments with his name. This dynasty lasted 6 years, from 404 to 398 B. C. The 29th Dynasty The Twenty-Ninth Dynasty ruled from Mendes (Tell El Rabaa 35 km to the east of Mansoura in Dakahlia Governorate). It was the capital of the 16th Nome in Lower Egypt), for the period from 398 to 380 B. C. The kings of the 29th Dynasty: 1. Nepherites I: He was the founder of the 29th Dynasty. His previous career is totally unknown, although it must have been a military one. He undertook large building activities in many Egyptian cities. The burial of an Apis bull is recorded to his reign. 2. Achoris: The reign of Achoris was characterized by an atmosphere of national renewal. He had great building activity at the major Egyptian temples. A number of objects inscribed with his cartouche were found as far away as Phoenicia. This is considered to be an indication of the Egyptian reappearance on the international stage. For three years, from 385 to 383 B. C. Achoris succeeded in withstanding the Persian armies' attempts to conquer Egypt. the Egyptian armies were now united under a single ruler. The Egyptian navy was one of the most powerful of its time, and the army had the support of Greek mercenary troops. These Greeks, inspired by anti-Persian feelings, provided a strong defense in the area of the Pelusiac branch of the Nile. By the summer of 380 B. C. the Persians seriously decided to recapture Egypt. .
