Are there more blowouts in game margins? The graph to the right looks at the last 600 Regular season games only (broken up into 3 groups of 200 games – with the most recent group of 200 games starting at Round 3, 2020 – under the new rules) &gt; </p><p>The number of games decided by 6 points or less is decidedly less in the most recent period. The number of games decided by a margin of 12 points or less is also noticeably less. Furthermore, there is a much higher number of games decided by 13 points or more than in the two periods prior to covid. There’s even been more 13+ margins than 1-12 margins over the last 200 games. Clear evidence that the game is definitely nowhere near as close as it was. </p><p>&lt; If we take a look at the total number of points scored, we again see that the most recent period has had a dramatic increase. There’s been 8473 points scored over the last 200 games, at an average of 42.37 points per game. In the 200 games prior there was 7892 points scored – 581 less. </p><p>But it’s not just that simple. Not all teams have had an increase in their points scored. The Broncos atack has dropped off immensely across all 3 periods, while the Raiders, Bulldogs and SeaEagles have also goten worse, but much more gradually. Ten of the 16 clubs though have seen their atack score more points in the latest period than the previous. </p><p>4 | LEAGUEUNLIMITED.COM | <strong>THE FRONT ROW </strong>| VOL 2 ISSUE 8 </p><p>^ This is enough to prove that the majority of teams have found scoring points to be easier under covid. </p><p>Finally, there has been an increase on the previous period for high scores, especially when it comes to scores of 40 or more. Since Round 3 last year, there have been 37 occasions where a score of 40 or more had been posted, compared to 23 occasions in the 200 games previous. &gt; </p><p>Something has definitely happened since the game returned from the covid-19 break last year. </p><p>More points are being scored, the margin of games are considerably wider and most of the teams are scoring more points. </p><p>There are several factors, with the most telling being the loss of one referee, which means policing of the ruck has dropped significantly. The set restart rule allows teams to maintain possession for longer periods without stoppages – which, when combined with the 2 point field goal concept, appear to be constructs that are more closely aligned with Rugby Union than Rugby League. game was possible of going down to the wire. <br>The game now has vastly less stoppages.
