Designed and Printed by Director, DESIDOC on behalf of DRDO, India FOREWORD Dr. V K Saraswat SA to RM, Secy, Dept. of Defence R&D and DG DRDO "A nation's strength ultimately lies in what it can do on its own and not in what it can borrow from others" "Self-reliance is good for any country, but for a country of our size and circumstances, it is indispensable" Former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi harged with driving India's Self Reliance in Defence, DRDO has been spearheading the Nation's efforts along with public and private sector companies. Over the years, we have Chelped substantially to reduce India's dependence on import in defence-critical solutions for our Armed Forces - the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. DRDO engagement with Indian industries is over the past five decades and almost ever since DRDO came into existence. Through their participation, the Indian private sector industries are exposed to advanced defence technology areas that are normally closely guarded by the developed Nations. During development, DRDO involves the industries in the design reviews that enable them to acquire not just the "know- hows" but also the "know-whys" which is very essential for the industries to add value. This knowledge gained by the industries will ultimately enable the industries to deliver quality products, systems required for the Indian Armed Forces and will also enable them to get into the supply chain of major multi nationals and be successful. Some industries are already getting into that position. Currently about 1000 Indian industries are associated with many DRDO projects and programmes. Their active participation in the design stage of the development projects have enabled them to grow in the value chain from B2P (Build to Print) to B2D (Build to Design) to B2S (Build to Specification) to B2R (Build to Requirement). A few among the industries have achieved the capability and the capacity to become system integrators in certain areas. The production value of the Defence Systems based on DRDO developed technologies, cleared by Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) for induction into Services (excluding Strategic System) is about Rs 1.5 Lakh Crores and the private sector contribution in this is quite significant. With more and more PREFACE DRDO systems getting into the production pipeline after successful user evaluations, this figure will go up sharply in the near future and the private sector will be a significant benefactor in this. DRDO has been awarded the prestigious Thomson Reuters India Innovation Award- 2011 in "Hi-Tech Shri S Radhakrishnan Academic & Government" Category on the basis of size of patent portfolio, success rate, extent of Director, Directorate of Industry Interface & globalization and influence of innovation as the analytical parameters. Technology Management (DI2 TM) DRDO HQr "The fruits of our technological progress must also reach to the common man. This is the only way in which we can make every citizen of India a productive participant in India's growth story. DRDO has a crucial role to play in leading by example". The Government at the highest level is expecting DRDO's on behalf of DRDO would like place on record our sincere gratitude to all our Industry partners technologies must reach the society at large beyond its intended military purpose. who stood by us in all our projects and programmes and shared both the successes and the failures. But for your active participation, understanding and passion for learning despite the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh in his speech on I difficulties, we would not have achieved the successes today that have placed India in the world map. the occasion of Technology Day Celebrations, 12 May 2008. From almost zero industry base in the 1950s, today close to 1000 industries are working closely with The benefits of DRDO's technological progress are passed on to Industries through transfer of DRDO. The first edition received many kudos from all the stakeholders and also certain feedback like to technology agreements for both military products and civilian spin offs products. This in the long run include the industries what have taken the ToT from DRDO labs. This has been included in this will enable the industries to produce high quality, high reliable military and industrial products and compendium. systems at an affordable cost that will not only boost the indigenous content in defence systems but Every care has been taken to include only those industries that are actively involved in the also help the Nation to reduce large scale import of defence systems. The benefits the Indian development activities and have added value to DRDO products at various stages. While some of the industries can derive by their active participation with DRDO are manifold, I, therefore urge the Indian industries have shown their capability in "Build to Design/Print", some have matured over the years of industries to join hands with DRDO in our mission to achieve greater level of indigenisation in all our association with DRDO project teams to undertake "Build to Specification" & some have even systems and technologies and also help the Nation to achieve higher level of Self Reliance in Defence graduated to "Build to Requirements" stage.
