Farm Tractors are machines used for pulling or pushing agricultural machinery. These are typically equipped with a PTO [Power Take-Off] and 3 point hitch. The 3 point hitch is used to attach an implement (attachment) to the tractor. The PTO is used to power the attached impalement. Farm tractors can be two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and may have single wheels, dual wheels, or may have Tractor with Dual Wheels crawler tracks. They may also be gas or diesel powered. Tractor with Tracks 3 Point Hitch Tractor with Single Wheels 4 FARM TRACTORS – Cont. Tractor Attachments Front Loaders are buckets which attach to a frame at the front of the tractor. The size of the buckets vary, and may also be equipped with bale spears for transporting hay bales. Bale Spear Loaders are similar to traditional front loaders except with a Tractor with Front Loader hay bale spears instead of a bucket. Spear size and configuration vary. Fork Loaders are similar to traditional front loaders except with forks instead of a bucket. Fork lengths can vary. Counterweights are used to balance the tractor while using an implement. These may be front or rear mounted, Tractor with Bale Spear depending on the use. Tractor with Fork Loader Counterweight 5 FARM TRACTORS – Cont. Tractor Attachments Box Blades are implements, used with tractors, that contour and smooth land. These are mostly unpowered and attach to the tractor via the 3 point hitch Backhoes may be attached to a tractor via the 3 point hitch. These can have a variety of bucket sizes, and attach to the rear of tractor. Box Blade Rotary Mowers are mowing attachments consisting of rotating blades. These may be mid-mounted or rear mounted via the 3 point hitch. Rotary mowers are powered by the tractor’s PTO. Flail Mower attachments are used Tractor with Backhoe Attachment when mowing is needed in hard to reach places. Most are PTO powered and usually attach via the 3 point hitch. They typically have a seat and mid-mount mower. Zero Turn Mowers are riding mowers with a 0 turn radius. These are typically equipped with a roll over protection system (ROPS) and may have deck sizes ranging from 48”-72”. They may be diesel or gas powered. Lawn Tractor Stand on mowers are mowers in which the users stand on a floating platform attached at the rear. These may have deck sizes ranging from 48”-72” and may be diesel or gas powered. Walk behind mowers are mowers that the user walk behind in order to operate. These may have deck sizes ranging from 48”-72” and may be diesel or gas powered. A Combine is a machine that harvests grain crops. The name is derived from 3 functions, combined into one machine. Common crops harvested with combines are wheat, oats, rye, barley, corn, and others. Grain/Flex Headers use a knife cutting bar in order to harvest the crop. These are typically defined by the Combine with Grain Header length. Corn Headers are specifically designed for harvesting corn. These are defined by how many “rows” they have. Common amount of rows are 6,8, and 12 rows. Grain Header/Platform Pickup Headers are used for crops that have already been cut and placed in windrows or swaths. Corn Header Combine with Pickup Header 10 COMBINES – Cont. Cultivators and harrows are defined by their frame teeth (also called shanks) which pierce the soil. These attachments may have up to 16 rows. Balers are tractor attachments which collect and compress a cut and rakes crop. These bales may be either square or round. Common options are twine or Cultivator surface wrap, and bale kickers which are used for placement. Harrow Baler Square Baler 12 MISCELLANEOUS – Cont. Planters are towable tractor attachments which sow crops through a field. These may connect with a drawbar or 3 point hitch. Planters lay seeds in rows. These may have up to 24 rows. Spreaders are implements used to distribute manure over a field as fertilizer. These are typically towable, Planter utilizing the tractor’s PTO (power-take- off). Windrowers (Swather) are implements used to cut hay or small grain crops into a row. They are also called “Swathers”. Spreader Windrower (“Swather”) 13 MISCELLANEOUS – Cont. A Cotton Picker is a machine used to harvest cotton quickly and efficiently. They may be two-wheel or four-wheel drive, and typically equipped with a lift basket and telescoping top. They commonly have 4, 6, or 8 rows. Sprayers are used to apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers on crops. They may be two-wheel or four- Cotton Picker wheel drive, and typically have a hydrostatic transmission. A Forage Harvester is a farm implement used to harvest forage plants for silage (grass, corn and other chopped plants compacted together). These are typically used in conjunction with a trailer which collects the material. Applicator/Sprayer Forage Harvester 14 MISCELLANEOUS – Cont. A Grinder Mixer is a machine used for granulating feed for livestock. These mills are typically towable and PTO driven. A Gravity Wagon is an angled hopper style trailer which uses gravity to unload the contents. They typically haul crops or fertilizer. Orchard Sprayers are machines used Grinder Mixer to spray herbicides and pesticides on orchard crops. These are commonly trailer mounted, and may either be engine or PTO driven. Fan size and capacity can vary. Gravity wagon Orchard Sprayer 15 Center Pivots A Center Pivot is a machine used for crop irrigation. The machine rotates around a pivot, watering crops with sprinklers. These are defined by their towers (pivot axle), spans (distance between 2 towers), total length, and pipe diameter, among other things. They can include an overhang (end piece held up with cables), and may also have a section used for corners. These are typically powered by diesel powered engines. 16 .
