TWO NEW ORCHID GENERA 399 X. Two orchid genera new to Sumatra (Orchidaceae) A. Schuiteman Rijksherbarium / Hortus Botanicus, POB 9514, NL-2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands Summary of the orchid Kuhlhasseltia Species genera and Orchipedum are recorded from Sumatra for the first time. Introduction The subtribe Orchidaceae-Goodyerinae is well represented in Malesia, with about 25 genera and hundreds of species. They are almost exclusively terrestrial plants with inconspicuous flowers, usually growing in deep shade in undisturbed forests. Many seem to prefer sloping terrain with seeping water. Some have very beautiful foliage and with are occasionally (often difficulty) cultivated, being popularly known as Jewel of the Orchids, e.g. species genera Anoectochilus, Dossinia, Goodyera, Ludisia, and Macodes. The of the other either have great majority Goodyerinae uniformly greenor cryptic darkbrown foliage. Although the genera ofthe Goodyerinae are reasonably distinct, it is often necessary to analyse a flowerbefore a reliable identification can be made. As a result they are fre- quently left unidentified, or, worse, they are incorrectly referred to generaof which the name is more or less familiar, such as Anoectochilus and Goodyera. While going through the unidentified and misidentified Goodyerinae in the Rijksher- barium, several interesting discoveries were made. Two of these are discussed below. Kuhlhasseltia cf. javanica J.J. Smith Mamas River Sumatra, Aceh, Upper valley, 1400-1700m (De Wilde & De Wilde- 18264 June Duyfjes , 1979). The genus Kuhlhasseltia, although widely distributedfrom PeninsularMalaysia to New Guinea with about7 species, is rarely collected. This appears to be the first record from Sumatra. Orchipedum plantaginifolium Breda Lau Alas 200-400 Wilde Sumatra, Aceh, valley, m {De & De Wilde-Duyfjes 12759, June 1972). Vegetatively this remarkablespecies, the only one in the genus, is among the largest Goodyprinae-, it is not easily overlooked and must therefore be a very rare plant, as it has been collected only four times before: twice in Java and twice in Peninsular Malay- sia, the last time in 1938 (fide Seidenfaden& Wood, 1992).
