We are proud to be able to hold the Forum with participants from such a variety of backgrounds, both culturally and academically. During the Forum, we truly hope you stumble upon a lot of discoveries both in the outer world and within yourselves, have a chance to reflect upon and share them, and most important of all, have fun! I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude towards the staff, our advisors, visiting sites, speakers, our sponsors, and all other individuals and parties that gave us indispensable help to make the Forum happen. The whole idea started from a chat over dinner one and a half years ago, and this timeframe was certainly not a short one, although it was not long at all either, given the scale of the event and all the preparations that had to be gone through. It is our sincere hope that this special encounter between all individuals and parties become the foundation for the future network of leaders in science and technology. STeLA US President Masaru Tsuchiya The STeLA Leadership Forum 2007 in Tokyo is the first memorable leadership forum for the young generation in science and technology. This forum is a great challenge for all of our STeLA members. We have had many difficulties preparing for the forum, but we have overcome all of it and have made the forum real. I really appreciate our STeLA members for their hard work and endurance to make it through the year, and the participants of STeLA Leadership Forum 2007 in Tokyo for their enthusiasm and various efforts to improve the forum. I would also like to extend my appreciation to all those that worked to make the forum possible: the MIT-Japan Program, IFIT, and all of our supporters who made contributions to our forum. Without their donations of time, funds and other important contributions, this forum could not have been held. It is truly my pleasure to meet you all and I hope you fully enjoy the STeLA Leadership Forum 2007 in Tokyo. STeLA Japan President Jiyoung Choi 2 Messages from Our Advisors “I am very excited about this initiative in bringing together students from various backgrounds, culture, and areas of study to Japan to think about, discuss, and take the first step towards their future leadership roles from a science and technology standpoint. I am certain that the forum will bear fruit in a very profound way.” Richard J. Samuels Ford International Professor of Political Science Director, MIT-Japan Program Massachusetts Institute of Technology “Dear all participants, Welcome to STeLA Forum 2007! I am very happy to announce the opening of this forum and to have you all here because I have been working with STeLA as an advisor almost from the startup. From the viewpoint of a faculty member, I promise that the forum will provide you with the precious experience and delight that make you highly valued engineers/scientists, through the opportunity to learn about leadership. Enjoy this forum first, and everything you need will follow.” Shigeki Saito Associate Professor Tokyo Institute of Technology “The STeLA leadership forum is something I have dreamed to see happen because I have been concerned about the narrowness of the scope of typical science and technology education for many years. I am very much looking forward to seeing the impact of this initiative to create a new leadership in coming years.” Hiroshi Ishii Professor of Media Arts and Sciences MIT Media Laboratory Massachusetts Institute of Technology “The MIT-Japan Program is delighted to support this emerging network of young technologists dedicated to taking a leadership role on science and technology issues that are critical for the future of this planet. It is especially gratifying to be part of a student-initiated venture that brings deep understanding and entrepreneurial energy to this conference.” Patricia Gercik Managing Director MIT-Japan Program 3 Schedule Leadership Education Session 17:00 - 18:00 Check in at NIYE/NYC (Arts Bldg.)
