Devastated by the Black Plague in 1634, the frightened villagers of Oberammergau reenacted the crucifixion of Christ, vowing to God that if they were spared, they would perform the Passion Play every ten years. Their prayers were answered, and now 2022 will mark the 42nd production of the play as well as the town’s continued commitment to honor its pledge.
