It has been serialized online in the digital edition of Takeshobo Web Comic Gamma since 2012 and has been assembled in eight volumes of tankobon. The anime adaptation of the television series Kinema Citrus aired from July 7 to September 29, 2017. The sequel premiered in Japan on January 17, 2020. It was supposed to be released in the U.S. on April 11, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The story tells the story of an orphaned young girl Rico, who finds and befriends a humanoid robot Reg and descends with him into the titular Abyss, which leads deep into the Earth, hoping to find his mother. The site of an orphaned girl named Rico lives in the belchero orphanage in the city of Ost. The city is surrounded by a strange giant hole, other inland, which is usually called the Abyss. The abyss of harbor artifacts and remnants of civilization is long gone, and is therefore a popular hunting spot for so-called cave raiders who undertake difficult and dangerous descents into a mist-filled pit to recover all the relics they can find. Returning from the abyss can be dangerous, as the Curse of the Abyss, a mysterious and potentially deadly disease, manifests itself upon ascension. The deeper one goes, the more acute the consequences of the curse; few of those who descended on the lower regions returned to talk about their experiences. Some legendary cave raiders earn the white whistle title, of them Rico's mother, Lyza. Rico really wants to follow in his mother's footsteps and become the White Whistle. One day she discovers a robot resembling a human boy in the abyss, and calls him Reg. Rico and her friends make their way to Regu in Belchero and quickly greet him in their close-knit group. Some time later, the balloon reaches the surface from the depths of the Abyss, containing pages of discoveries made by Lisa, as well as a message for Rico about what she is waiting for at the bottom of the Abyss. Rico, decided to find his mother, says goodbye to his friends and goes to the abyss with Reg as his companion. Characters of the main characters Of Rico (リコ) Voiced: Mia Tomita (Japanese); Brittany Lauda (English) Rico - energetic and trouble-prone 12-year-old girl who wants to imitate her mother, the legendary cave Raider named Lyza the Annihilator, who disappeared into the abyss ten years ago. Rico is currently being trained at the Belchero shelter. Despite the shelter's strict policy of flipping all finds to pay for operating expenses, she secretly took possession of one of her finds, Star Compass, which she hopes to use in her exploration of the Abyss. Her mother gave birth to her during a mission in the abyss. Lyza and Ozen subsequently brought Rico back from the depths of the abyss, using a relic seen as the Curse of the repulsive vessel. However, as a result of the curse, Rico wears glasses as she develops a headache if she doesn't look at the world through the lens. Reg (レグ, Regu) Voiced by: Maria Ise (Japanese); Lucy Christian (English) Amnesia robot with the appearance of a human boy. It can also consume organic food despite being a machine. With no memory of his name, it was named Reg after the dog Rico used for his own. His mechanical hands are emollient and can also shoot a deadly energy beam capable of melting even a stone that is a Rico dubs burner. Reg's accompanying helmet seems to flash mysteriously changing patterns every time he is placed on his head. Nanachi (ナナチ) Voiced by Shiori Izawa (Japanese); Brittney Karbowski (English) Nanaci - Hollow (成れ果て, Narehate) with a few rabbit traits. As a human child, Nanachi lived in slums, cleaning food and writing media, eating out of garbage and learning to read ancient glyphs. Nanachi befriended a young girl named Mitty, and together they were sent to the sixth layer in one of Bondrewd's experiments. Upon his return, Nanachi's humanity was partially lost, while Mitty lost all her humanity and became a grotesque, immortal assortment of flesh and deformed limbs. Nanachi escaped with Mitty from Bondrad's lab to spare her the pain of his brutal experiments, courted her until after her physical death, and then agreed rico and Regu during their trips to the Layers. Nanachi uses gender-neutral pronouns, and the writer left Nanachi's gender deliberately ambiguous. Mitty (ミティ, Muti) Voiced: Erie Kitamura (Japanese); Monica Rial (English) Strange, amorphous creature that lives with Nanachi on the 4th Layer of the Abyss. In the past, Mitty was a normal human girl (with red hair and fair skin) who lived with Nanachi and a large group of other orphans in a mechanical cavernous area. As a result of sending Bonyed to the sixth level, her appearance resembles a deformed cat with a large mouth, one eye and the personality of a friendly dog. The curse also made her immortal and Bondrewd conducted horrific experiments on her to test her recovery from potentially fatal injuries. Mitty also has the ability to provide an antidote to the poisonous creatures of the Abyss. Director of belchero orphanage (院⻑, Inchyo) Voiced by: Jaco Somi (Japanese); Julie Oliver-Touchstone (English) Director of Belchero Children's Home in Aust. It is quite strict, and has some interesting punishments for children who do not obey the rules of the orphanage. Jiruo (ジオ) / Leader (リダ, Rde) Voiced by: Taishi Murata (Japanese); Daniel Regoho (English) Is a young assistant instructor (Moon Whistle) at the Belchero shelter, which was once Lyza's subdill, caring for Rico after her birth. Though harsh, he is also extremely astute and keen-minded, and behind his seemingly indifferent facade he is a compassionate and honest soul. His students are commonly referred to as leaders. He is now in his 20s. Nat (ナト, Natto) Voiced by: Mutsumi Tamura (Japanese); Shannon Emerick (English) Nat is one of Rico's friends in the orphanage. Hinting that he had feelings for her, as he was the one most firmly against her descent into the abyss. Shiggy (シギ, Shige) Voiced by: Manami Numakura (Japanese); Terry Doty (English) Shiggy is another of Rico's friends in the orphanage. He helped Rico hide the true nature of Reg from adults and, like Nat, knew about Rico's plans to look for his mother in the abyss. Kiyuy (キユ) Voiced by Manami Hanawa (Japanese); Kalin Coates (English) The youngest orphan in Belchero and one of Rico's friends. Kiyui has yet to reach the status of the red whistle, so he wears a bell and takes part in daily chores at the orphanage while red whistles are out of training. Habolg Cave Raiders (ハボグ, Haborugu) Voiced by Tetsu Inada (Japanese); John Swasey (English) Friendly, familiar Black Whistle, who delivered the White Whistle Lyza and the final notes to the surface, and supported the two main characters shortly after their departure. He often visited Rico and her friends when not on an expedition, and referred Rico in uncle. Ozen (オゼ, Ozen) Voiced: Sayaka Ohara (Japanese); Christina Oten (English) White Whistle, known as Ozen Real, in charge of the camp finder on the second layer. She was Lisa's mentor and helped her bring Rico back to the surface after stillbirth. It turned out that Ozen cared deeply about Lisa, despite her tough persona, and Ozen promised Lyza to send Rico to her if the circumstances presented themselves. Ozen has built numerous relics into her body, which gave her great power and strength. Habolg also claimed that Ozen had raided the caves for at least 50 years. Marulk (マク, Maruruku) Voiced: Aki Toyosaki (Japanese); Kelly Peters (English) Blue Whistle and assistant to Ozen, who is friends with Rico and Reg during their stay in the camp. Marulk looks like a girl and wears a blue maid dress, but uses the male pronoun side. It is concluded that Ozen makes Marulka dress in this way. Lyza (pitザ Raiza) Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese); Shelley Kalene-Black (English) mother of Rico. She is a former ozen subdivision and one of the few cave raiders to be named White Whistle, with the title Lyza the Annihilator. It is noted that it not only conquered many dangers of the Abyss, but also fought with raiders of foreign states. Bondrewd (ボドド, Bondorudo) Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese); David Harbold (English) White Whistle with a bad reputation, Bondrewd the Novel is responsible for Idofront, the forward operating base of the Cave Raiders in the fifth layer, guarding the gate in the sixth layer of the Abyss.
