Gen. William D. “Drew” DeHaes, Deputy Adjutant General of the Iowa Air National Guard, will retire from the Iowa Air National Guard effective Jan. 15, 2018 after 29 years of service. Governor Kim Reynolds has selected Col. Shawn D. Ford as DeHaes’ successor. DeHaes, 54, a native of Irving, Texas, entered the U.S. Air Force in 1988 and was commissioned in 1989 at Officer’s Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Following completion of Euro-NATO Joint Jet pilot training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas in 1990, he was assigned as a First Assignment Instructor Pilot. While stationed at Sheppard, DeHaes served as a Squadron Executive Officer, Wing Standards/Evaluation Pilot, and Chief Spin Demonstration and Recovery Pilot. During his next tour, he was the F-16 Chief of Wing Flying Safety at Aviano Air Base, Italy. DeHaes commanded the 132nd Fighter Wing, Iowa Air National Guard and also previously served as the Wing’s Vice Commander and Operations Group Commander. He is a Command Pilot with more than 3,300 flying hours in the T-37B, T-38A, AT-38B, and F-16C/D aircraft and has flown operational missions in support of Operations Deny Flight, Deliberate Force, Noble Eagle, Northern Watch, Southern Watch and Iraqi Freedom. DeHaes’ civilian and military education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Texas A&M University and a Master of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He also graduated from the U.S. Air Force Squadron Officer’s School, Air Command and Staff College, and the Air War College. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (three times), Air Medal (five times), Aerial Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Award (twice), Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (five times), Combat Readiness Medal IOWA NATIONAL GUARD Mission Focused – Warrior Ready IOWA NATIONAL GUARD Page 2 of 2 Mission Focused – Warrior Ready (five times), National Defense Service Medal (twice), Iraq Campaign Medal (with star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon Short, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border (three times), Air Force Longevity Service Award (six times), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with bronze hourglass,“M” device and numeral 4), Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (Pistol), Air Force Training Ribbon and the NATO Medal. Ford, 47, a native of Hockessin, Del., was commissioned in 1993 through the Reserve Officer Training Corp program at the University of Delaware. Following the completion of pilot training at Reese Air Force Base (AFB), Texas in 1995 and F-16 training at Luke AFB, Ariz., he was assigned to Kunsan Air Base (AB), Korea. During tours at Mountain Home AFB (2) and Osan AB, Korea, he served as an F-16 Electronic Combat pilot, Standardization and Evaluation officer, Squadron Weapons Officer, and Wing Weapons Officer. Following active duty, Colonel Ford served as an operational test pilot at the Air National Guard Air Force Reserve Command Test Center at Tucson where he managed the aircraft software program for all Block 30 F-16 aircraft. Ford served the 132nd Wing, Iowa Air National Guard as the Distributed Training Operation Center Program Manager and 132nd Operations Group Commander for the Block 30 F-16 mission and MQ-9 Reaper mission. He currently serves as the commander of the 132nd Wing. Ford is a Command Pilot with more than 3,500 flying hours in the F-16 and MQ-9 aircraft, and has flown more than 500 combat hours in support of Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Freedom Sentinel. Ford’s education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware, Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College. His military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Air Medal (seven awards), Aerial Achievement Medal (six awards), Air Force Commendation Medal (two awards), Air Force Combat Action Medal, Meritorious Unit Award (two awards), Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (Valor device and six awards), Combat Readiness Medal (three awards), Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (one bronze campaign star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (three bronze campaign stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (one bronze campaign star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon Short Tour (two awards), Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon (with gold border and five awards), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with “M” device and numeral 2), Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, and NATO Medal.
