The data in this studbook is current as of November 3, 2014. The living population of the studbook is listed in alphabetical order of SPARKS mnemonic for each institution. The historic population is listed by studbook number and includes all snow leopards that have passed through North American captive breeding facilities from 1903 to December 7, 2014. It is important to note that any snow leopards currently at an institution that did not reply to the 2014 inquiry are listed as lost-to-follow-up. Status of the population in captivity The living population comprises 85.80.1 specimens at 68 institutions. The historic population includes 1464 individuals. Description of data fields Studbook: They are originally assigned with Temporary (T0000) numbers until the Permanent number is assigned by the International Studbook Keeper. Sex: F for female; M for male; ? for unknown; f for contracepted/neutered female, m for contracepted/neutered male. Birth Date: For captive born animals, this is the actual date of birth. Birth dates for wild-caught animals were estimated to the nearest month or year. Birth dates for wild-caught animals with no estimated birth date or recorded age and animals with unknown histories are indicated by ????? Sire and Dam: The parents of each specimen are identified by their studbook numbers. If parents are unknown, they are indicated by “UNK”. Wild-born founders are indicated by “WILD”. Location: The location, referenced in the Location Glossary, indicates a specimen’s location or owner as of that date. Date: The date an event occurred. For example, the birth, capture, or transfer of an animal. Local ID: This is the institution’s accession number for a particular specimen. In most cases, this is the same as the institution’s ISIS number for that specimen. Event: Birth, captures, transfers, loans or deaths. Name: For those specimens that have been given a house name, the most recently assigned name is listed. 1 Natural History Identification – Thick gray, white, or yellowish fur coat with ringed spots of black on brown. The paws and tail are heavily furred. The head relatively small for it’s body size, has small ears and a heavy brow. They are approximately 2 feet at the shoulders, 6 – 7 feet long (includes the 40 inch tail). The tail which is used for balance can be nearly as long as the rest of it’s body. They weigh between 60 – 120 pounds; with the females typically smaller than the males. Lifespan – Due to their reclusive nature, it is hard to determine their lifespan in the wild. In captivity they have been known to live as long as 21 years. Diet – Their main prey is the Blue Sheep, Argali, Markhor, Ibex, and other small mammals and birds. Population – It is estimated that there are between 3,000 and 7,000 left in the wild. Range – They are found in the mountain range of Central Asia, from Afghanistan to Kazakstan and Russia, to northern India and China. They can be found at altitudes between 9,000 to 17,000 feet high where the terrain is steep and rocky providing good coverage to help them sneak up on their prey. Each snow leopard has defined home range that overlaps with other cats in the area. Depending upon the availability of prey, their home ranges can be from 18 - 40 square miles up to 620 square miles. Reproduction – Mating season is usually between January to mid-March in the wild. In captivity they have been known to breed from January to June. Gestation is between 98 and 106 days, and litter size can be between 1-4 cubs.
