EDUCATION IN REDDITCH Taken from the Index of Newspaper Documents (1836 – 2014) 1 This Document…….. We have been researching the history of Redditch as reported in newspapers as events happened. We have collected together over 15,000 clips of such events and these have been organised into about 200 categories. Each of these documents reports the newspaper clips for that category in chronological sequence. At the start of each document is an index to the contents of that document. This document represents the index for the”Education” document which gives an overall view of education in Redditch through the years 1836 – 2014. These documents have been created to enable those interested in researching, or just reading about Redditch history, an opportunity to see what topics have been included in the detailed documents, which, for copyright reasons, cannot be put on-line. The detailed documents are accessible off-line at shows, exhibitions and other events organised by the Redditch Local History Society. 2 Newspaper Titles - 6 Education in Redditch (Document 1836 – 1939) Contents Advert - Misses Helen and Eliza Williams - Beg to inform their Friends and the Public that their Establishment for the Education of Young Ladies will Re-open on the 9th January next. – December 1836 7 Redditch – The National and Sunday-school children were feasted plentifully in the large assembly room at the “Red Lion Inn”; and many of the manufacturers, with their accustomed liberality, gave excellent suppers, at the various Inns to their workmen. – January 1842 7 The Wesleyan Methodists of Headless Cross, near Redditch, have recently erected two school rooms, in connexion with their chapel. – November 1843 7 A Public Meeting 8 Advert – To Builders - Persons desirous of Contracting for the Erection of New Schools and School House of Redditch may inspect the Plans and Specifications on application to Mr Osborne of Redditch. – September 1845 8 Hon Lady Harriet Clive would lay the foundation stone of the National Schools – October 1845 9 National Schools – Opening then new and expensive National Schoolrooms. – August 1846 10 The new national schoolrooms lately erected in Redditch by Mr Thos. Hill, on a piece of ground given for the purpose by Lady Harriet Clive, were formally opened. – September 1846 10 The Opening of the New Schools at Redditch, in connection with the Established Church, was celebrated by a dinner to the children on Monday last. The land was the gift of the Hon. R. H. Clive, and the erection is in the Elizabethan style. – September 1846 11 Advert – School for Young Ladies - Prospect House – Mount Pleasant – Near Redditch. January 1847 11 3 National and Sunday Schools – November 1848 11 Redditch National School – It is gratifying to learn that this valuable institution, so long supported by the late Earl of Plymouth and his amiable lady, the present Countess of Amherst, will be still sustained in active and useful operation. – January 1849 12 Headless Cross – Sunday School Anniversary – June 1849 12 Headless Cross – School-rooms – April 1850 12 The Church Schools – January 1852 12 Education in Worcestershire – Mr Bellairs, Government Educational Inspector for the South Midland District of England, has recently issued his report to the Committee of Privy Council on Education for 1851. – July 1852 13 Ladies School in Evesham Street – Mrs Tilt, daughter of the Rev. T. Ashwell. – June 1853 13 May-Day – Luckily for the National School children, was fine, and thus afforded the little innocents an afternoon’s recreation and enjoyment in the cricket field. – May 1857 14 Education – Messrs. Bartleet & Sons of Redditch, have notified to their numerous work people that after Easter no children will be received into their employ who cannot read and write. – March 1858 14 The children belonging to the Wesleyan Sunday Schools, numbering upwards of 400, perambulated the town, headed by a brass band. – August 1858 15 Redditch – Sir John Ratcliff, Mayor of Birmingham, laid the foundation-stone of a new School for the children of Dissenters at Redditch – November 1859 15 Laying the Foundation Stone of the Wesleyan Day and Sunday Schools – November 1859 16 The New Wesleyan Schools at Headless Cross – December 1859 17 School Treats – The children of the Wesleyan day and Sunday schools, numbering nearly 600, enjoyed their annual treat. – August 1865 17 The Messrs. Avery, whose family have, for upwards of 30 years resided at Headless Cross, are well known to have been first and foremost in the work of improvement. Staunch advocates and promoters of education. – November 1865 18 Wesleyan Schools – The children held their annual jubilee, walking in procession, 900 in number, with flags and banners, through the streets, escorted by the Rifle Corps Band, to Church Green. – July 1866 18 4 Owing to the great increase in the number of children attending the roman Catholic Schools in connection with Mount Carmel Church, it has been for some time contemplated to build a new and larger building. – August 1867 19 House of Commons – Petitions – In Favour of Religious Instruction – April 1870 19 The Baptist Schools – The memorial stone for the new Sunday Schools in course of erection was laid by Alderman Stephenson. – September 1876 19 Pianoforte-Teacher – Wanted – Apply, Mr Bryant, Upper School, Redditch. – March 1878 20 Commercial School, The Firs, Astwood Bank, near Redditch – Established 1853 – July 1880 20 Concert and Ball – A concert was given in the Park Road Room on behalf of the funds of the newly erected Mount Carmel Infant Schools. – May 1881 21 The Parish Schools – June 1881 22 National School Treat – Some 1150 children and teachers assembled at the schools, where a procession was formed, headed by the town band. – July 1881 23 School Board 24 School of Art 24 Lord Windsor’s Schools – These schools were visited by the Rev. C. Jerram Hunt, the Diocesan Inspector, on the 17th ultimo. April 1882 25 Church Sunday and Day Schools & School Treats – July 1882 26 Boarders – The Misses Shaw (daughters of the Rev. G. Shaw, Congregational Minister) are prepared to receive a few young ladies, from eight to thirteen years of age. – December 1882 27 Wanted, immediately, an ex Pupil Teacher as Assistant Mistress, for a mixed school, under Master. – September 1883 27 St George’s School – Mr V. Milward gave a lecture in aid of the funds of the above school. – December 1883 28 St George’s School – We hear that this school has been closed for a time in consequence of the prevalence of measles in the neighbourhood. – April 1884 28 5 A handsome Christmas tree, given by Lord Windsor, was exhibited in St George’s schools. – January 1887 29 National Schools – An entertainment in aid of a fund for providing prizes for children who had attended regularly and passed the Government examinations was held in the above schools. – December 1887 29 New Congregational Schools – Memorial stones of new Congregational Schools were laid in the presence of a large number of ladies and gentlemen, by Councillor Allcock, Miss E. Abbott, and Mrs H.
