As you can see from my abbreviated curriculum vitae, I have had extensive experience in the parliamentary process throughout my career in organized dentistry. Having served in more than 40 houses of delegates as a delegate and nine as the speaker of the house, my experience and training have given me significant exposure to the process of parliamentary procedure in our profession. After completing the American Institute of Parliamentarians training course in 1982, I began to participate in the procedural aspects of political decisions and continue to do so today. I have served as an educator in meetings and parliamentary procedure for the California Dental Association not only as part of the new delegate orientation but also in trustee orientation programs for many years. In addition, I have been a consultant to the California Society of Pediatric Dentists and the San Gabriel Dental Society to assist with efficient meetings and use of parliamentary procedure to assure fair process. The dean of the UCLA School of Dentistry had me teach leadership for several years in the honors Dean's Leadership Institute. Why do you want to be ADA Speaker? What do you hope to accomplish? In my experience as speaker of the House of Delegates of the California Dental Association, I was able to facilitate and perpetuate several changes that made for a more efficient board and a more user-friendly house. It is my hope that as ADA speaker that I can continue to assist our delegates, particularly the newer additions to the house, in negotiating the sometimes difficult pathway through parliamentary procedure to assure good process and fairness in the conduct of the business of the house. I have served the American Dental Association as a delegate, on two reference committees and in various other capacities for many years. I would like to continue that service as speaker and be able to assist the constituents of our organization with parliamentary questions and methodology for getting the important work of the house completed. Fairness and protection of the rights of the minority are two of the mainstay tenets of good parliamentary procedure. It is my hope to be sure that all voices are heard and that delegates are not encumbered by the parliamentary process enabling them to be active in the business of the house.
