TARA is a member of the International Federation of Rock Art Organizations. www.africanrockart.org from the chairman In the last six months one of the most positive developments has been our new partnership with UNESCO. Following meetings in Paris in June, TARA was invited to cooperate with UNESCO in promoting the conservation and awareness of Africa’s rock art heritage. In July, I spoke on “Under Represented Rock Art Heritage Sites in Africa” at UNESCO’s international conference held in Durban. Returning via Johannesburg, my wife, Deborah and I attended Nelson Mandela’s birthday celebrations which included a lecture by Nobel prize-winner Wangari Maathai. In April the rock art exhibition “The Future of Africa’s Past” opened at the National Museum in Dar es Salaam to great acclaim. The opening event was attended by around 200 people and the exhibition remained on display for more than 3 months and was visited by over 20,000 people. In May, TARA helped facilitate a gathering of 30 African UN Ambassadors in New York for the purpose of appealing to African governments to act to protect their rock art heritage “before it is too late”. The event was hosted by the Algerian Ambassador to the UN, Dr Abdallah Baali. At the beginning of June, Alec Campbell and I were invited to France by Jean Clottes to visit the famous Chauvet Cave. Magnificent cave lions, woolly rhinos, bison and cave bears awaited us in this cave, all painted more than 20,000 years before the pyramids. In early September Amolo and I flew to Mfangano Island, Lake Victoria to help launch Kenya’s first rock art tourism project, a TARA project in collaboration with the Abasuba Peace Museum and the National Museums of Kenya. The ceremony, in a cave with geometric paintings, was attended by Kenya’s Minister of National Heritage, the US Ambassador to Kenya and the Chairman of the Kenya Tourist Board. We also visited Kakapel rock painting site south of Mt Elgon where we were greeted by several hundred enthusiastic villagers. The Kakapel site is covered under the same rock art tourism project. Teachers and adult visitors to the exhibition received a copy of the Tanzania edition of the rock art guidebook, which was sponsored by Vodacom Tanzania Limited, who were also lead sponsors of the exhibition overall. 3000 copies of this Tanzania edition were given out, plus another 1000 or so of the general East Africa guide book. All children received a one-page flier on African rock art. X-Rays showed that she had fractured vertebrae and ribs and it was decided to bring her back to Kenya to recuperate near her family and friends as soon as possible.
