Minoor was very gifted and had a sharp business mind. With his extended land holdings and income from the crops grown on them he quickly became a financier. During the 1890’s he used a bullock cart (a small two wheel covered wagon made of bamboo drawn by two oxen) to travel between Jorhat and Titabar. He would often go into Jorhat to draw money from the local bank, return to Titabar, distribute the money to the 266 local businesses. Over the years he added tea estate financing. One lucrative financing contract was with the Scottish Assam Tea Company at Heeleka where he lived. Minoor soon ventured into Tea planting and Tea manufacturing with his brother. He and Shanoor started planting tea bushes at Motijan and Hirajan. He then went on to start the Hunwal tea estate with two external partners, Hajji Jalaluddin and Ali Akbar. As Hunwal grew into a sizable tea estate he decided to appoint his oldest son Taimus Ali Hazarika as Manager. His partners objected and wanted to also include their sons. The partnership fell through and Minoor walked away from Hunwal tea estate. Minoor and younger brother Shanoor had a dispute involving rupees 5,000. The brothers parted company and it was said never spoke to each other again. Ironic since Minoor’s grand children married many of Shanoor’s descendents. There was a great deal of social interaction between the two families even though the two brothers were estranged. From the records it looks like Minoor was the Banker of the family but most of his descendents did not have his business skills and became professionals like Doctor’s, Government administrators, etc. Shanoor his younger brother seemed to be a worker bee but had the good fortune to have his eldest son Firdost Ali Hazarika turn out to become a very sharp and talented business man. It was Firdost who made the family wealthy and famous in the State of Assam. He was the true visionary and disciplinarian but unfortunately even after three marriages he had no children. Minoor finally left Heeleka and moved back to Jorhat and died at the age of 83, three years after the death of his younger brother Shanoor who died at age 69. THE DESCENDENTS OF MINOOR ALI HAZARIKA The purpose of this section is to give the reader a brief overview of some but not all of the descendents of Minoor Hazarika. He had many descendents and details can be traced in Part 8. Minoor Ali Hazarika married three times probably after the death of each wife. He had two children from his first wife and little is known of them. Minoor had seven children from his second wife but only a few are being documented: His eldest daughter from his second marriage was Roshan Habiban Nissa who is the mother of Noorbahar Begum (Moina) who married Tafazzul Hazarika, son of Shanoor Ali Hazarika. Roshan Habiban Nissa is also the great grandmother of Shagufa Ahmed’s (first wife of Tanweer Mohammed) mother. Roshan Habiban Nissa’s sister Habiban Nissa was Sona Noorbahar’s (wife of Sharif Hazarika, grandson of Shanoor Hazarika) grandmother. 267 Roshan Habiban Nissa’s brother was Nurul Hussain Hazarika who married Dilbahar Begum who’s brother was Hirajan-aur Bobaty (Bkhta Jarnal Ahmed) proprietor of Hirajan tea estate. Bkhta Jarnal Ahmed is Nellie Tanweer’s father. Shirajuddin Hazarika is the son of Nurul and Dilbahar Hazarika which makes him Nellie’s first cousin. Anjuman Ara was Shirajuddin Hazarika’s sister which makes Muyeed Zaman (son of Anjuman Ara and Rashidul Zaman) Nellie Tanweer’s nephew. Roshan Habiban sister Jamirun Nissa is Bella Rahman’s grandmother. Bella is the wife of Sajidur Rahman who is the son of Khan Bahadur Sayedur Rahman. She is also the grandmother of Dr. Nakibuz Zaman who married Ella, sister of Bella. Minoor had four children from his third wife and one of note is: Anwar Hussain Hazarika married Fanwar Begum. Fanwar Begum is the mother of Dr. Quamrul Hussain Hazarika of Shillong who married Fatima Rahman daughter of Khan Bahadur Sayedur Rahman. Fanwar Begum was a legendary lady in Shillong that everyone went to see. She always had plenty to say with a smile and a loud laugh that showed her red mouth from eating pan. A very lovely person. His descendent Shirajuddin Hussain Hazarika (from his second wife) is being documented in this section: Minoor Ali Hazarika Nurul Hussain Hazarika (son) from second marriage Shirajuddin Hazarika (grandson) Nurul Hussain Hazarika: Dilbahar Begum 268 SHIRAJUDDIN HUSSAIN HAZARIKA Shirajuddin Hussain Hazarika married Shamim Ara daughter of Ikram Rasul, Superintendent of Excise. Shiraj Hazarika is the eldest of seven children of Nurul and Dilbahar Hazarika. He was a frequent visitor to Motijan and got along very well with the sons and daughters of Tafazzul. He was good friends with Georgina Dutt. When he was young, Georgina mentioned to him that she would only marry an IPS officer. Shiraj Hazarika was not a man to let opportunity slip by, after all Georgina Hazarika was beautiful and had plenty of money. He took the IPS national examination but unfortunately was short by just two points (marks). Georgina ended up marrying Dinesh Dutt who was an IPS graduate! Shiraj Hazarika and Georgina continued to be life long friends. He was also very close to the rest of the family. Shiraj Hazarika is tall (over six feet) and handsome man and worked for the Excise department. He married Shamim Ara daughter of Malekan Khatoon and Ikram Rasul who was the Excise Superintendent. A good decision since he later on in life became the Commissioner of Excise of Assam. Shiraj Hazarika and Shamim Ara were married in October, 1949. Shiraj arranged the marriage. He became aware that the Guwahati Chief Justice’s house was available and arranged the reception there after the wedding. Shiraj Hazarika is very soft spoken and highly intelligent on many subjects and loves to engage in lively discussions. Shamim Ara is a delightful person about 5’ 2” in height that welcomes everyone to her home and always provides a lovely meal. She is very simple and like her husband loves to talk with people. They built their house at Guwahati and are retired. Colonel Zunnur Ali, IMS and Ikram Rasul’s mother were brother and sister. Colonel Zunnur Ali was Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed’s father. Thus Ikram Rasul and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed were first cousins. Shamim Ara is therefore Fakhruddin’s niece. Ikram Rasul’s sister was Usera (Beauty) who is Saleha Rahman’s grandmother. Children of Nurul Hussain Hazarika and Dilbahar Begum: Shirajuddin Hussain Hazarika, married Shamim Ara daughter of Ikram Rasul, Excise Suptd., Guwahati. Shiraj became Commissioner of Excise, Assam; lives in Guwahati. Shiraz in 2005 had aged but still engaged in lively discussions. Badruz Zaman Hazarika Anjuman Ara married Rashidul Zaman Ahmed IAS, (Nana) Commissioner of Taxes & Excise in 1965. Son of Khan Bahadur Haji Faizuddin Ahmed EAC, Jorhat. Lived in Shillong. Had a loud and vibrant laugh, very strict, a short and gentle person. Anjuman Ara was a very quiet and lovely person, a great cook.
