Just SillyBy Douglas J. BassettIn Revolutionary-era France, a woman is saved from a rabid mob by the man who killed her brother years ago, the man she's sworn to destroy.I have a fairly high tolerance for melodrama and melodramatic sequences and even I found this one just plain silly. Orczy on some level seems to agree, as she starts the book with a long explanation/justification for a character who would do such odd things in the story -- presumably to try and make her more plausible? I guess? I'm not sure it really works, at the very least you can feel the heavy degree of contrivance in it. The love interest, humorously, is just stick-stone stupid -- it's the only way the melodrama/story can play out, but it's impossible to take him seriously. Basically beefcake, to be honest about it, just done a little more sophisticated than one is used to seeing nowadays. My guess is that this was a test run to see if a series was possible -- the Scarlet Pimpernel appears here, but strictly in a supporting role. As such it worked, but you can probably skip it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Scarlet Pimpernel, Don't Blink Or You'll Miss HimBy TheWhistlerUnto itself this story, if fleshed out, would be an enjoyable read. However, regarded as part of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' series I would expect said character to make more than a cameo appearance, and since I consider the series to be more of romance than adventure Marguerite is no where to be seen, perhaps she is in disguise? A poor imitation of the Percy, Maeguerite relationship.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The sequel to the Scarlet PimpernelBy Michael T KennedyThis is Baroness Orczy's sequel to her classic Scarlet Pimpernel. The protagonist is a wealthy Parisian lawyer who is forced into a duel with a rich young wastrel ten years before the Revolution. The Revolution finds the same lawyer a well regarded deputy in the Assembly. He is a philanthropist and well loved, even by the Paris mob. Unbeknown to him, the young sister of the man he killed in the duel has sworn revenge on him. They meet and the action takes off from there. The Pimpernel makes his appearance and the ending is happy. It is not as good a read as the first novel but worth while if you like this genre. Baroness Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála "Emmuska" Orczy de Orczi was a Hungarian-born British novelist, playwright and artist of noble origin. She is most known for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel. Some of her paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. -Wikipedia About the AuthorBaroness Emma Orczy (1865-1945) was born in Hungary, the daughter of a baron. Raised in wealth among the aristocracy, she determined to achieve success as a painter and illustrator before starting a writing career. She wrote in English, although she did not speak the language until she was fifteen, and she produced many short stories and detective novels. Her greatest success came with the historical adventure novel The Scarlet Pimpernel.Johanna Ward (a.k.a. Kate Reading) is an Audie(R) Award-winning narrator and has received numerous Earphones Awards from AudioFile magazine. She is also a theater actor in the Washington, DC, area and has been a member of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company since 1987. Her work onstage has been recognized by the Helen Hayes Awards Society, among others. She and her husband live in Hyattsville, Maryland, with their two children. From AudioFilePublished in 1906, this tale of high romance and intrigue, set during the bloodiest days of the French Revolution, is the first of several sequels to The Scarlet Pimpernel. It has aged well. Johanna Ward is fun to listen to. She puts the author's rather melodramatic prose in the best possible light by reading with restraint, gravity and authority. She also renders fluently the frequent names and phrases in French. Although character voices are not highly differentiated, it's always clear who's speaking and how he or she feels. Good production values top off the welcome reappearance of an old friend. J.N.
