SPECIAL RELEASE _____________________________FORMERLY HELMS ATHLETIC FOUIMDATIDM-FDUMOEn 193B ____________________________ DENNIS SPROUL, LOS ALTOS QB, ACCLAIMED TOP PERFORMER IN AAAA FOOTBALL..FOR 73 SEASON _ D E NNIS SPROUL, 6-3, 195-POUND QUARTERBACK WHO DIRECTED THE LOS ALTOS HIGH — 'SCHOOL CONQUERORS TO THE CIF "AAAA" DIVISION FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1973, HAS BEEN SELECTED PLAYER OF THE YEAR IN HIS DIVISION BY MEMBERS OF THE CITIZENS SAVINGS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION'S ALL-SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BOARD OF ATHLETICS. EY SO DOING, LOS ALTOS BECAME THE FIRST HIGH SCHOOL IN CIF HISTORY TO WIN BACK-TO- BACK TITLES IN "AAA" AND "AAAA" DIVISION PLAY. LOS ALTOS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH DWAYNE DeSPAIN, WHOSE TEAM WENT 12-1 DURING THE COMPLETE SEASON, SPEAKS IN GLOWING TERMS OF HIS ACE QUARTERBACK AND HIS TITLE- WINNERS OVER THE PAST TWO SEASONS. "SPROUL DID A FINE JOB FOR US THIS SEASON AND HE WILL MAKE SOME COLLEGE COACH SLEEP A LOT EASIER OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. OUR TEAM HAS PLAYED TOGETHER FOR FOUR YEARS AND THEY JUST WORK WEIL TOGETHER. I AM EXTREMELY PROUD OF THEM." In the championship game against Crespi, Sproul completed 17 of 26 aerials for l6 l yards and one touchdown. The Conquerors won the ball game 21-7 after de­ feating Santa Ana Valley (22-15), Servite (35-17) and Anaheim (34-20). It is in­ teresting to note that Los Altos finished second to undefeated South Hills in the Sierra League and got into the playoffs as an "at large" team. They proved to be the very best. ALL-STAR TEAM PLAYERS HONORED AT MAGIC MOUNTAIN ON SAT., JAN. 19TH Through the generousty of officials at Magic Mountain Park,- those players named for All-Southern California Football Team honors will be guests of honor at the park on Sat., Jan. 19th at which time the 37th Annual All-Southern Cal­ ifornia Board of Football will hold its awards ceremonies. Honored players, coaches, parents and school officials will all be hosted at Magic Mountain for an exciting day of fun following the awards ceremonies which will begin at 10:30 am. Framed scroll awards will be presented to all honored players, while players of the year and championship team coaches will receive bronze medallion awards and silver tumblers respectively. There are 27 "AAAA Division high schools represented on this year's selec­ tions for the first time honoring both offensive and defensive teams. Prior to 1973, teams were selected without signifying offense or defense. Champion Los Altos placed six performers on the offensive and defensive units ....five on offense and one on defense. Runner-up Crespi had four players honored, with two on offense and two on defense. Fifty division players are honored on the teams, with St. Paul (4), Santa Ana Valley (3 ), Newport Harbor (3 ), Servite (3)» Santa Monica (3 ), North Torrance (2), West Torrance (2), Buena (2) and Anaheim (2 ) placing more than one player.
