We 21 compare the regional patterns found in 139 lexical dialect maps based on a 1.8 billion word 22 corpus of geolocated UK Twitter data and the BBC Voices dialect survey. A spatial analysis 23 of these 139 map pairs finds a strong alignment between these two data sources, offering 24 evidence that both approaches to data collection allow for the same basic underlying regional 25 patterns to be identified. We argue that these results license the use of Twitter corpora for 26 general inquiries into regional lexical variation and change. 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 Mapping Lexical Variation using Twitter 2 35 1 Introduction 36 Regional dialectology has traditionally been based on data elicited through surveys and 37 interviews, but in recent years there has been growing interest in mapping linguistic variation 38 through the analysis of very large corpora of natural language collected online. Such corpus- 39 based approaches to the study of language variation and change are becoming increasingly 40 common across sociolinguistics (Nguyen et al. 2016), but have been adopted most 41 enthusiastically in dialectology, where traditional forms of data collection are so onerous. 42 Dialect surveys typically require fieldworkers to interview many informants from across a 43 region and are thus some of the most expensive and complex endeavours in linguistics. As a 44 result, there have only been a handful of surveys completed in the UK and the US in over a 45 century of research. These studies have been immensely informative and influential, shaping 46 our understanding of the mechanisms of language variation and change and giving rise to the 47 modern field of sociolinguistics, but they have not allowed regional dialect variation to be 48 fully understood, especially above the levels of phonetics and phonology. As was recently 49 lamented in the popular press (Sheidlower 2018), this shift from dialectology as a social 50 science to a data science has led to a less personal form of scholarship, but it has nevertheless 51 reinvigorated the field, democratising dialectology by allowing anyone to analyse regional 52 linguistic variation on a large scale. 53 The main challenge associated with corpus-based dialectology is sampling natural 54 language in sufficient quantities from across a region of interest to permit meaningful 55 analyses to be conducted. The rise of corpus-based dialectology has only become possible 56 with the rise of computer-mediated communication, which deposits massive amounts of 57 regionalised language data online every day. Aside from early studies based on corpora of 58 letters to the editor downloaded from newspaper websites (e.g. Grieve 2009), this research 59 has been almost entirely based on Twitter, which facilitates the collection of large amounts of 60 geolocated data. Research on regional lexical variation on American Twitter has been 61 especially active (e.g. Eisenstein et al. 2012; Doyle 2014; Eisenstein et al., 2014; Cook et al. 62 2014; Jones 2015; Huang et al. 2016; Kulkarni et al. 2016; Grieve et al. 2018). For example, 63 Huang et al. (2016) found that regional dialect patterns on American Twitter largely align 64 with traditional dialect regions, based on an analysis of lexical alternations, while Grieve et 65 al. (2018) identified five main regional patterns of lexical innovation through an analysis of 66 the relative frequencies of emerging words. Twitter has also been used to study more specific 67 varieties of American English. For example, Jones (2015) analysed regional variation in 68 African American Twitter, finding that African American dialect regions reflect the pathways 69 taken by Southern Blacks as they migrated north during the Great Migration. There has been 70 considerably less Twitter-based dialectology for British English. Most notably, Bailey (2015, 71 2016) compiled a corpus of UK Twitter and mapped a selection of lexical and phonetic 72 variables, while Shoemark et al. (2017) looked at a Twitter corpus to see if users were more 73 likely to use Scottish forms when Tweeting on Scottish topics. In addition, Durham (2016) 74 used a corpus of Welsh English Twitter to examine attitudes towards accents in Wales, and 75 Willis et al. (2018) have begun to map grammatical variation in the UK. 76 Research in corpus-based dialectology has grown dramatically in recent years, but 77 there are still a number of basic questions that have yet to be fully addressed. Perhaps the 78 most important of these is whether the maps of individual features generated through the 79 analysis of Twitter corpora correspond to the maps generated through the analysis of 80 traditional survey data. Some studies have begun to investigate this issue. For example, Cook 81 et al. (2014) found that lexical Twitter maps often match the maps in the Dictionary of 82 American Regional English and Urban Dictionary (see also Rahimi et al. 2017), while Doyle 83 (2014) found that Twitter maps are similar to the maps from the Atlas of North American 84 English and the Harvard Dialect Survey. Similarly, Bailey (2015, 2016) found a general 2 Mapping Lexical Variation using Twitter 3 85 alignment for a selection of features for British English. While these studies have shown that 86 Twitter maps can align with traditional dialect maps, the comparisons have been limited – 87 based on some combination of a small number of hand selected forms, restricted comparison 88 data (e.g. dictionary entries), small or problematically sampled Twitter corpora (e.g. 89 compiled by searching for individual words), and informal approaches to map comparison. 90 A feature-by-feature comparison of Twitter maps and survey maps is needed because 91 it is unclear to what extent Twitter maps reflect general patterns of regional linguistic 92 variation. The careful analysis of a large and representative Twitter corpus is sufficient to 93 map regional patterns on Twitter, but it is also important to know if such maps generalise 94 past this variety, as this would license the use of Twitter data for general investigations of 95 regional linguistic variation and change, as well as for a wide range of applications. The 96 primary goal of this study is therefore to compare lexical dialect maps based on Twitter 97 corpora and survey data so as to assess the degree to which these two approaches to data 98 collection yield comparable results. We do not assume that the results of surveys generalise; 99 rather, we believe that alignment between these two very different sources of dialect data is 100 strong evidence that both approaches to data collection allow for more general patterns of 101 regional dialect variation to be mapped.
