Back in the day when most people in America were busy manufacturing things, it fell to just a few to amuse the rest—and those people were the ones who appeared in newspapers and magazines and on TV. But now that some of our greatest products are ideas, culture, and entertainment, a much larger swath of people are seeking your attention through those outlets as well as social media channels. For this, INKED’s culture issue, we cut through the abyss that is the current media and highlight the people from the tattoo community who rightfully deserve to be heard. The first is Ben Shields (1), Ryan Gosling’s tattooer, who also designed the carny ink for Gosling’s Luke in The Place Beyond the Pines. Along with his contribution to tattoo art and cinema, Shields created the B Soap Company, which manufactures tattoo aftercare soap. Julia Arielle Cox (2) had some good, clean fun with Less Than Jake—who, as an act, turned 21 and invited the photographer to the party. Our cover subject, rock goddess and Zippo muse, Jayme Foxx was shot by the unequaled Marley Kate (3, behind Foxx).
