I was there as Vice President of IPPS International and working with local Chinese to set up IPPS China. I was also working with director of Shanghai Real Estate and Garden Company on their plans for the major China Plant and Flower Expo in 2021. As I have mentioned in prior articles the whole way China approaches ꢀowering plants is inspiring. When we were there in May for initial IPPS China conference we were astounded by the rose plantings along the freeways of Hangzhou. We think there was 100km plus of freeway all lined with perfect roses in full ꢀower. Stunning! Wish we could do the same here.

Gaillardia x grandiꢀora 'Mesa Yellow'

I was only in Shanghai for three days of meetings but two of those were cancelled due to typhoons. So whilst sitting in hotel lobby working on laptop I started writing. The way the Chinese responded to the call by the president to ‘Color China with Plants’was amazing. It made us (Australian nurserymen) jealous due to the increased demand for plants. However as a free thinking Australian, I (and others in the group) felt somewhat uncomfortable at the eꢁorts local Chinese went to ‘obey’the president. The nurseries beneꢂtted from the call but it shows the level of governmental control over the community...

Gaillardia x grandiꢀora 'Arizona Sun'
Gaillardia x The way the Chinese government controls the country is contrary to what we see as a good way to live. In some ways this is true as we value personal freedom as the most important aspect of modern life. However I someꢀmes feel that the old fashioned ‘benevolent dictatorship’ has some posiꢀve aspects. The ability for a government to do what needs to be done without having to convince a cynical media can make for a beꢁer world. The media is not answerable to the community in any way other than raꢀngs – not really democraꢀc. However it is able to influence the social direcꢀon of the Australian people.

The crazy thing is when I return to Australia our Government is in chaos due to a relay bad poll result and a media baying for blood. The Prime Minister is under siege from his own party, government is too close to get legislaꢀon through and we seem to be rudderless. At the same ꢀme unemployment is as low as it has been for years and the economy is ꢀcking along at a steady rate. Interest rates are low, housing is on the increase and overall the community is preꢁy happy. In theory we should have stable government.

This probably means a change of Prime Minister followed by an elecꢀon. In fact I bet we have a new Prime Minister by the ꢀme this goes to press. We need the elecꢀon to seꢁle the poliꢀcs down and allow business to get on with producing and selling product. For us we just want a great spring with fine weekends and happy and acꢀve home gardeners. We are an opꢀmisꢀc industry and every year we plan for a busy spring summer and as oſten as not it happens.

The pleasing thing to see is the resurgence of indoor plants especially as it is happening amongst a new generaꢀon of plant lovers. The internet and Social Media are alive with collectors of unusual indoor plants like Variegated Monstera, Chinese Money Plant and rare succulents. The main collectors are young and new to plants. We have a commercial quaranꢀning facility and are seeing hundred of new succulents every year. This year we are also seeing a wide selecꢀon of Monstera and Philodendrons coming through. All exciꢀng stuff.

Overall I am looking forward to a busy six months with lots of new and old fashioned plants. Spring starts next week and the gardens are already looking good. I love spring in Melbourne and I hope your spring is busy and rewarding.

Clive Larkman

Exotics

Dark Pink Chinese Lantern Red Legs Oyster Plant Dwarf White African Lily Giant African Lily

dark pink All Year

$1.65 E X PS M SH3

SH2
Dec-Feb $2.35 E V PS MC2 SH1 Dec-Mar $2.35 E V PS MC2 CL

Abutilon x hybridum 'Pink Storm' Acanthus mollis 'Red Legs'

mauve, purpNov-Jan $1.95 E O PS L

**

white purple maroon blue

Agapanthus praecox orientalis 'Snowball' T/C Agapanthus 'Purple Cloud' T/C Akebia longeracemosa Aquilegia 'Songbird Blue' Aquilegia 'Songbird Cardinal' NEW LINE Arctotis x hybrida 'Yellow'

Fragrant Akebia

Sep-Nov $1.75 E X PS M

Sep-Dec $1.50 E Z PS M
CRR
Blue Granny's Bonnet Cardinal Columbine Yellow Arctotis crimson + wSep-Dec $1.50 E Z PS M yellow white
Apr-Nov $1.65 E O PS C2 GC

All Year $0.95 E Y PS M SH2

White Daisy

Special

Argyranthemum frutescens 'White Large Si Buddleja davidii 'Black Knight'

Black Butterfly Bush

deep purpleNov-Jan $1.50 E Z PS MC2 SH3

BD/BE CC1/C2

===
Bulb -
