Florida History Department ARCHIVES 700 Fleming, Key West, Florida www.keyslibraries.org The Beginning of the Florida History Department • Betty Bruce, a fourth generation conch, began the Florida History Reference room with a “few boxes behind the desk” in 1964/65. She continued to compile family genealogies, research local history, collect important documents and aid community members in discovering their own roots for 20 years, retiring in 1985. Tom Hambright, the Monroe County Historian, then took over the Department. Our Collections • The Florida History Room and Archive Vault Hold Thousands of Historic and Genealogical Items Dating from the 1800’s – Present day. Our items are Mostly related to Key West, yet we do have items from the middle and upper keys. • Our Physical items include: Vertical Collections, Microfilm, Directories, Sandborn Maps, Citizenship Documents, Church/Baptism Books, Cemetery Records, audio/visual and more. • From topics such as African-American History to the WPA, our Vertical Files contain news clippings, photos, local magazines, correspondence, charter documents, family attributions and miscellaneous ephemera. Vertical Files • We also have larger boxed collections, such as the Navy, Cuban History, Biographies, Organizations, Church Histories and Privately Donated items. • The FHD houses the Key West Citizen, in addition to film records of Births, Baptisms, Marriages, Naval Admiral Documents Microfilm and Deed Books. We have two microfilm readers, which are able to scan film and capture items into PDF files. Directories, Sandborn Maps and Deed Books BINDERS Indexes to additional resources, prominent families, Bahamian documents, house information, and Church records. Collection Highlights Our Flickr Site has over 20,500 scanned photographs and will soon reach 19 million hits. The site was created in 2006 and our volunteers have been invaluable to the expanse of this collection. Future Online Directory • Volunteers have been scanning Historic Documents, Letters, Funeral Records, Scrapbooks and Citizenship Papers. • Through a Partnership with FIU, the Florida History Department will soon have a searchable website dedicated to our paper collections.
