July 23-August 2, 1998 70th Summer North American Bridge Championships Chicago Vol. 70, No. 11 Monday, August 3, 1998 Editors: Henry Francis and Paul Linxwiler DAILY BULLETINSpingold drama down to the wire NickellColossal drama in the wins Spingold! The by Nick Nickell1 team, leading by 2 IMPs with two boards to go, made four hearts on Board 63. In the other room, the de- fense got off to the best opening lead and beat four hearts -- 10 IMPs to Nickell, now up 12. On the last board, BAZE made four spades -- a most difficult contract. But BAZE had to double in the other room and beat the contract two tricks to win. They beat the contract two, but didn’t double, so the 11 IMPs they won fell 1 IMP short. Another single-IMP victory, NICKELL 112, BAZE 111. That’s five wins in the past six years for Nickell, Dick Freeman, Eric Rodwell, Jeff Meckstroth and Bob Hamman. Paul Soloway was the sixth this time, but Bobby Wolff was on the other four championship teams. And BAZE just missed winning a second straight Spingold winners hold the Nate Spingold Trophy on high as they celebrate their victory. Left to right: Jeff Meckstroth, continued on page 4 Bob Hamman, Dick Freeman, Paul Soloway, Eric Rodwell and Nick Nickell. Berkowitz, Bjerkan win Mixed Board-a-Match The team of David and Lisa Berkowitz and Jim and Cheri Bjerkan won the Mixed Board-a-Match with a score of 38.16. This is the fourth time the Berkowitzes have won the event, formerly known as the Master Mixed Teams. David has 15 previous NABC victories, Lisa has 10 as well a win in last year’s Venice Cup. They live in Old Tappan NJ. For the Bjerkans, this is their first win in the Mixed. It is also the first NABC title for Jim who hasn’t played tournament bridge in more than six years. “Many of Jim’s Chicago-area friends were ex- cited to see him playing again,” said David. “His time off from bridge hasn’t hurt his game a bit. He and Cheri played great.” Cheri Bjerkan has nine previous NABC titles. Like Lisa, she also has a previous Venice Cup victory. continued on page 4 The champions! Jim and Cheri Bjerkan together with Lisa and David Berkowitz topped a strong field in the Mixed Board-A-Match Teams. Hurd team wins Junior Trials in upset The team captained by John Hurd of Charleston SC came from behind in the 32-board final of the U.S. Junior Team Trials to win the match by 5.5 IMPs. Hurd and his teammates (Alan Epley of Kent WA, Lisa Kow of Pleasant Hill CA, Brian Meyer of Buf- falo NY, Michael Kitces of Great Falls VA and Kevin Bathurst of Brentwood TN) thus become U.S. I, with the right to represent the U.S. in international com- petition as part of the national Junior team. They defeated the powerful and experienced squad of Thomas Carmichael of Iselin NJ, David Wiegand of Portland OR, Chris Carmichael of At- lanta GA and Joel Wooldridge of Buffalo NY. The Carmichael team led at the half by 16.5 IMPs, but the Hurd squad had a great set on the last 16 boards winning by 24 IMPs. Hurd, 19, is a geology student at the College of continued on page 4 Winners of the U.S. Junior Team Trials, left to right: John Hurd, Lisa Kow, Alan Epley, Kevin Bathurst, Mike Kitces and Brian Meyer.
