CTE SPOTLIGHT Marilyn Henselman Director of Career and Technical CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION, Mid-February 2021 Education Programs DID YOU MISS THE CTE TOWN HALL THAT WAS HELD ON FEBRUARY 9? If you missed the CTE Town Hall that was held on February 9, please watch the recording to see information regarding all our CTE career pathways from middle school to high school. The information provided during this session was intended to help parents and students understand the many career pathways available through the Bellevue School District. You may also want to review the CTE Career Pathways book that outlines each career pathway with a 6- year student plan from middle to high school for each career pathway. The book also explains all college credit opportunities and industry recognized certifications that are possible under these career pathways. Below are the links for these resources: CTE Career Pathways Book: https://bsd405.org/wp-content/pdf/cte/CTE-career-pathways-2021-2022.pdf CTE Town Hall Recording: https://youtu.be/VH34oJJsqPw WHAT’S HAPPENING IN CTE REGARDING BACK TO SCHOOL IN-PERSON SERVICES? Over the summer and into the school year, CTE has been working to get classrooms ready once we received the green light to return. This was particularly important for our two- and three-hour Satellite and WANIC programs. These programs provide industry recognized certifications, but also include college credit. These programs have specific skills that must be met and cannot be done virtually to be ready for state exams. With the eager cooperation and encouragement of the instructors and some hard work getting the classrooms ready, the following programs have or are returning: • Culinary Arts and Advanced Culinary Arts with Chef Tracy Green at Newport HS – January 11 • Automotive Technology with Instructor Pete McCue at Bellevue HS – February 1 • Nursery and Greenhouse Operations with Instructor Lisa Lindholm at Interlake – February 1 • Welding Fabrication & Technology with Instructor Jim Agnew at Interlake – February 8 • Advanced Digital Media Technology with Instructor Steven Hamada at Newport – February 9 • Health Careers with Instructor JaneMarie Brown at Sammamish – March 1 • CISCO with Jeff Mason and Mike Hansen at Newport – Asynchronous Group Reviews – March 1 Thank you to the teachers, parents and students for your continued support and enthusiasm returning to school! (Images are from the Automotive Technology program at Bellevue High!) DECA HAS GREAT SUCCESS EVEN DURING COVID AND VIRTUAL COMPETITIONS! Like many things this school year, the Area DECA Conference was different. Normally, the teachers take students over to the Meydenbauer Center where they dress up in business clothes and interact with volunteers from the business community. As Tammi Rigger, Bellevue High DECA Advisor commented, “I love doing the competition because I think it’s such a great experience for students to have to apply their knowledge amidst all the nervous energy of competition and working with an adult. I was worried that the experience wouldn’t be as valuable this year, but I was wrong. Students are so resilient and adapted well to recording their presentation and submitting it for review by those volunteer judges from the business community. To say I am proud of their commitment and effort is an understatement.” The awards were held on Zoom Friday afternoon, and all the students did an outstanding job of representing the Bellevue School District! More than 1200 students from the Bellevue, Issaquah, and Snoqualmie Valley School Districts as well as Eastside Catholic and the Overlake School competed in 30 different events. Students scoring in the Top 12 in each event will move on to the State Career Development Conference, also virtual this year, in late February/early March.
