___________________________________________________________________________ ANGAS FAMILY PAPERS PRG 175 Series List John Howard Angas (1823-1904) was the second son of George Fife Angas. He arrived in South Australia in September 1843, having been appointed to manage his father's estates in the colony. He settled at Tarrawatta near Angaston where he established a successful pastoral business and built a fine homestead called Collingrove. The purchase of further land and livestock soon made him one of the largest landowners and foremost stud-breeders in the colony. In 1871 he entered Parliament as the member for Barossa later becoming a member of the Legislative Council for the Central District from 1887-94. His social, religious and philanthropic interests were also extensive and influential, and he contributed generously towards the establishment of many colonial institutions, including the University of Adelaide. He left an estate worth some £800,000.1 Susanne Collins Angas, the wife of John Howard Angas, was the daughter of Richard Collins, a corn-factor of Bowden, near Manchester. Her marriage to J.H. Angas took place in England in May 1855. She returned with her husband to live at Collingrove, but ill-health caused them to return to England for some years during which time a son and daughter were born. She died in April 1910, six years after the death of her husband.2 Charles Howard Angas (1861-1928) was the son of J.H. Angas. After being educated at St. Peter's College Adelaide, and in England, he gradually assumed responsibility for his father's vast properties and interests. He too became prominent as a stock-breeder, most notably with Lincoln sheep, while his business interests included chairmanship of the Willowie Land and Pastoral Association and the S.A. Portland Cement Company. Other interests included polo and yatching. In 1885 he married Elizabeth Etty Dean, daughter of William Dean of Adelaide, and they took up residence at Lindsay House near Angaston, formerly occupied by his grandfather (G.F. Angas). They had four children, three sons - Ronald Fife Angas, Dudley Theyer Angas and John Keith Angas (later Sir Keith Angas) – and a daughter – Dorothy Beryl Angas. Charles Howard Angas died in December 1928.3 Ronald Fife Angas (1891-1978) was educated at St. Peter's Adelaide, and Oxford University. During the First World War he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in France and later as a wireless instructor with the Royal Air Force. In June 1915 he married Monica Murray and they later resided at Collingrove where he carried on the family interests in stockbreeding. His business connections were indeed, extensive and included the Directorship of Elders Trustee and Executor Company and the S.A. Portland Cement Company. He also showed a strong interest in sailing and motor cars. In 1976 he moved to Adelaide and officially presented Collingrove homestead to the National Trust of South Australia.4 1 Australian Dictionary of Biography, vol. 3, p.38. 2 Kinsgley Ireland, ‘The Angas Family of “Lindsay House” and “Collingrove”, Angaston’, Barossa Historic Bulletin, vol. 1, 1978, p.7. 3 Who’s Who in Adelaide 1921-22, p.103. 4 Ireland, op. cit. p.8.
