Conceived in controversy, the first copy issued from the presses on October 7, 1935. Machen spearheaded the publication of the Guardian with the assistance of a group of ministers and laymen in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA). The proximate cause of the Guardian was the disagreement between Machen and Dr. Samuel G. Craig, editor of Christianity Today (1930-1949). The nether cause was Machen's escalating struggle with modernism in the PCUSA. Machen had led in the formation of the Presbyterian Constitutional Covenant Union which was organized June 27, 1935 in Philadelphia. This group was committed to: (1) reform of the PCUSA; or (2) "failing that, to continue the true spiritual succession of that church in a body distinct from the existing organization." Dr. Craig had editorially questioned the wisdom of such a Union in the September 1935 issue of Christianity Today. Coincident with these developments were the trials of members of the Independent Board of Foreign Missions. The Independent Board had been organized by Machen in 1933 in response to the General Assembly's refusal to reform the PCUSA Board of Foreign Missions. But the General Assembly Mandate of 1934 forbade participation in and support for the Independent Board. Although Craig was sympathetic, he began to "vacillate" questioning the wisdom for the Independent Board and urging reform of the PCUSA from within. Machen felt the need for a new paper which would vigorously oppose modernism (even to the point of ecclesiastical separation) while guarding the Calvinism of the Westminster Standards. When the General Assembly of the PCUSA suspended Machen in 1936 (the so-called "Syracuse Assembly"), Machen formed the Presbyterian Church of America (since 1939, the Orthodox Presbyterian Church). From its infancy, the Presbyterian Guardian was closely associated with the Presbyterian Church of America/Orthodox Presbyterian Church. But she never became the denominational publication of the PCA/OPC. Machen, who chose her name, urged that the Guardian be independent of denominational control while committed to Presbyterianism and the Reformed faith as interpreted by the old Princeton tradition of Charles Hodge and Benjamin B. Warfield. i OUTLINE OF PUBLICATION DATA FOR THE PRESBYTERIAN GUARDIAN The Presbyterian Guardian, Volumes 1-48 (October 7, 1935-October 1979) Place of Publication: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Frequency: Twice monthly (October 7, 1935-June 26, 1937) Monthly (July 1937-December 1939) Twice monthly (January 10, 1940-June 1948) Monthly (June 1948-December 1958) Twice monthly (January 10, 1959-June 25, 1960) Monthly (August 1960-October 1979) Not published from January to April 1970 (Volume 39 has only six issues: May-November 1970) Editors: H. Author, title and subject entries are self-explanatory. The general sequence of volume number and pages (i.e. 2:5; 4:105, etc.) following a personal name refer to biographical/historical matters relative to that individual's career, i.e. ordination, installation, resignation, transfer, etc. Articles, if any, are in quotes beneath the general biographical entries. Letters to the editor are also found under the writter and the article to which the letter is a response. Citations for congregations do not include every mention of the church found in the pages of the Guardian (a prohibitive task). Only items of historical importance have been included, i.e. organization, dedication of a building, installation and resignation of pastors, congregational anniversaries, etc. Under the name "Orthodox Presbyterian Church" will be found reports of individual General Assemblies, Presbyterial and Presbytery meetings. Some reports on judicatories of denominations other than the OPC will also be found sub the particular denomination. Book reviews are found in two places: under the name of the reviewer in the early part of the index; in the Book Review section (pp. 350-363) by book author and title. A Scripture index is included (pp. 364-380) as well as an index to photographs (pp. 381-407) appearing in the Guardian (photos in advertisements have not been included). All identifiable persons and places have been included in the index to photographs. v A.A.C.S. (cf.
