Hughes Mausoleum (Ballyculter) Rendered mausoleum built c.1869. Rectangular in plan with a convex roof of pseudo-gothic revival style. Engaged brick built corner piers having cap stones. Recessed inscription plaque to the southwest elevation. Square-headed opening to the northeast elevation having cast-iron single-leaf door with beaded moulding and foliate air vents. Year Created 1869 Style Gothic Revival History The inscription plaque reads 'In memory of Hugh Hughes, of Ballyculter, who died on the 15th of October 1869, aged 40 years also in affectionate remembrance of his wife Eliza who died on the 12th day of April 1895, aged 67 years also their daughters Annie and Jane who died in childhood and the following members of the family. John died in Auckland N.Z 2nd Nov.1906 aged 50 years. Ellen died 16th July 1908 aged 46 years. Bernard died 31st Oct. 1913 aged 56 years. William died 16th June 1923 aged 57 years, interred in Brighton. Johnston died 26th of February 1955 aged 90 years and his wife Emma died 31st July 1931 aged 70 years. Elizabeth died 23rd Nov. 1947 aged 85 years'. Condition In overall good condition with some localised failure of render exposing brick built construction (2003).
