Best forward steers rose to an impressive £1340 given for a couple of grand Beef Shorthorn’s (21m) from Eddie Yeandle of Cheriton Fitzpaine whilst top priced heifers came from the Gifford family of Diptford with a pair of cracking Blue females (23m) at £1135. Cyril Emmett, Aylesbeare always brings something of quality and didn’t disappoint with a trio of strong Hereford bullocks (26m) reaching £1295 apiece and Simmentals to £1270, Cyril also saw three classy Hereford heifers (averaging 27m) rise to £1095 each. Limousin steers (24m) from Robert & Christine steer, Avonwick fetched £1200 whilst Blue steers (23m) from Charles & Ann Down of Abbotskerswell sold for £1180 as did a further Blue (23m) from Robert Hawkins of Awliscombe, also a pen of four Angus steers (25m) from Robert & Christine Steer attained the same price. Younger (15m) Angus steers ran to £1060 for Mike & Tim Leach of Upton Pyne whilst further Native breed cattle sold well, with Devon steers (24m) to £1130 for Russell Retter of Cotleigh. Charolais heifers (21m) saw a high of £1065 for Len Bartlett, Gittisham also £1000 for WKJ Harding of Throwleigh whilst MH & CJ Reed down from Kings Nympton sold shapely Blonde heifers (22m) to £990. 75 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneer: Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Steers to £840 Heifers to £670 A terrific trade for the entry forward here at Exeter. A wonderful entry of Lim crosses from John Jordan and family up from Chagford sold well with steers topping at an impressive £840 (8m), Nigel Baverstock across from Doddiscombsleigh saw the best of his Simmental cross steers reach £825 (10m). Another cracking consignment this time from Karen Pengelly of Blackawton saw the first pen attained £795 (9m) with others hitting £755 (8m). Ross Sizmur of Okehampton showed a pen of Blue steers which hit £745, whilst Chris Heath of Sherford up again this week realising £745 for Charolais steers. Heifers topped at £670 again from Nigel Baverstock showing Simmental crosses (10m). Limousin heifers from the Jordan family realised £645 (8m) with others attaining £600 (7m), Ron Wonnacott & Sons hit £645 for Charolais cross heifers with the second pen reaching £640, Hereford heifers from J Down of Widdon Down attained £570, whilst Blue heifers from Ross Sizmur reached £565 (10m). 104 CALVES – 10.15AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 A cracking entry of calves sold to a flying trade and some real quality young calves sold to a top of £465 CALVES - 10.15 am for an outstanding British Blue bull from Messrs CD Auctioneer: Mark Davis – 07773371774 & EM Gooding & Son of Ottery St Mary with other CALVES Bulls Heifers good Blues to £405 for Paul Hendy of Kingsbridge Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE and £395 for Christopher Lee of Exeter. Charolais bulls sold to £450 for a cracking calf from Martin & British Blue 4 465 375 9 285 201 Liz Bennett of Broadhembury who also sold a Limousin 8 410 311 7 312 256 Simmental bull at £345. Other Charolais to £352 for Charolais 2 450 401 3 280 255 Mark & Kim Davey of Lewdown. A Shorthorn bull sold well at £180 for Roy Collins of Honiton. Friesians sold well for the best to £175 for Steve Loud of Colyton with other good young shapely calves to £175 for J Cornish & Sons of Holcombe Rogus, £170 for David & Adrian Cole & £168 for Christopher Lee. 94 DAIRY – 11.30AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Mark Bromell 07966 430001 An excellent entry saw a strong contingent of buyers around the ring and trade although not just as sharp as two weeks ago was decent and topped at £1920 for a super heifer “Dartview Sid Carrie 35” by Pine-Tree Sid from Messrs JJ Palfrey & Co of Dartmouth who sold others to £1700 twice. Other heifers sold to £1900 for “Washbourne Milo Fitlist” sired by Wintersell Milo from Steve Caunter of Totnes who sold others to £1700 & £1620. GCB Davis of Tiverton sold heifers to £1750 & £1550 and Paul Nicholls of Penzance sold a sweet heifer at £1650. Crossbred heifers saw an easier trade than of late and Jersey cross heifers sold to £1150 for GCB Davis. No first quality cows forward but the best sold to £1220 for a third calver which calved in April from Merv Crudge & Lyn Shere of Chard who also sold an Ayrshire third calver due in October for £1000. In Calf Heifers due in September saw a Norwegian Red x heifer to £1250 for Peter Bromell of Bideford. A consignment of Cows due November-December from Messrs Catsfold Farm of West Sussex sold to a top of £1080 with others to £1020 & £1000. In Calf Friesian type heifers from the same farm sold to £1000 and four bulling heifers sold at £680 apiece. Heifer calves were a flying trade topping at £320 for GCB Davis who sold others to £300 (x2), £260 & £250 (x3). 1682 SHEEP – 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 1541 STORE LAMBS A bigger entry of store lambs yet again saw 1541 sell to £83 for nice forward sorts from Home Farm of South Molton, £80 for large Dorset’s from Robert Partridge of Teignmouth, £75.50 for smart Charollais crosses from MD & GJ Curtis of Yeoford and £73.50 for similar from Becky Moody of Tedburn St Mary. Other nice medium term lambs to £72.50 for Rob Shilston & Gemma Houghton of Bovey Tracey, £70.50 for A Hill of Tiverton, £70 for David & Michelle Wootton of Bovey Tracey and £69.50 for all James Baker of Exeter, David Heath of Sherford and John Cole of Ivybridge. Fewer hill lambs forward today but small lambs were similar on the week from £20 to £50 and the average overall was £60.50, down just a pound on last week. 64 GRAZING EWES A tidy line up of genuine grazers sold to £85 & £74 again for Home Farm, £64, £56 & £53 for Robert Partridge and £60 & £52 for Cross Hill farm of South Molton. 68 BREEDING EWES & RAMS Breeding ewes sold to £91 & £83 for FM Mules from Richard Hartnell and £90 & £89 for flock aged Texel crosses again for Home Farm whilst Robert Partridge sold his white Welsh Mule FM’s at £82 and Michael & Angela Bassett of South brent their cross bred ewes to £80. A nice run of predominantly Texel rams from Eric Gillbard of Thorverton sold to £300, £260, £240 (x2), £230 (x2) and £200 and Robert Partridge sold his young continental rams at £250 and £170. 9 COUPLES (4 EWES & 5 LAMBS) A young Texel cross ewe with a single sold to £121 for Michael & Angela Bassett, D Swancutt of Tedburn St Mary sold a Soya double at £72 and D & L Laskey of Ashburton sold singles to £62. SOWS Messrs Godwin of Bittaford saw their best at £192 with plenty between £170-£185. Chris Hill of Wellington sold a smart line-up of medium weight Heavy Weight 31 238.00 189.00 sows to a top call of £174 closely followed by Andrew Freemantle hitting Medium Weight 58 192.00 159.00 £168 and Jeremy Brown at £160. Again, Exeter saw the largest entry of sows in any market within the UK this week, with five buyers competing Light Weight 12 117.50 103.00 well.
