UNIT : Celebrations Learning Plan: of 10 Class: Theme: Celebrations Duration: 1hr Topic: A Gift Worth Giving: An Ornamental Plant CONSIDERATIONS: Context: Celebration of Friendship is a wonderful means for students to demonstrate love and appreciation for each other and a love one ☐HFLE in their lives. This can be exercised through Valentine’s Day which is celebrated each year at school, at home and in the society on February 14th. Students have developed a greater Literacy awareness of this celebration through the media. There are ☒Reading different ways in which students at this level can show their ☒Writing appreciation. ☒Oral Communication ☒Media & Outcomes: Information Literacy By the end of this learning experience students will: Numeracy recite a poem with the dramatic actions to depict the growth of ☐Problem Solving a seed to a plant ☐Critical thinking plant an ornamental seedling or cutting using an appropriate ☐Communication potting media. ☐Representation decorate their flowerpot ☐Reasoning make a gift card to complement the decorated flower pot compose greetings on their gift cards to express their ☒ICT Skills affection. ☒Differentiated Instruction Activities: Poem ☒Assessment for 1. Engage in reciting a poem “The Little Plant” with the learning dramatic actions to show the growth of a seed to a plant. Seedlings/Cuttings 2. Engage in a step by step procedure to plant their seedlings or cuttings in the soil. (Put soil in the flower pot using the garden tool, transplant the ornamental seedling/cutting into the pot using their hands dressed in gloves/garden tool, add more soil and water the plant.) 3. Students brought to the class their seedlings or cuttings in preparation for this exercise. (Poppy, Joseph Coat, Petunia etc.) Decorated Flower Pot 4. Decorate their flower pot with gift paper and ribbon to present as a Valentine’s gift to a love one. Making Gift Card 5. Use a piece of Bristol board 5cm by 5cm to design a gift card to attach to the decorated flower pot. 6. Write their greetings on their cards to express their affection. Resources: Small flower pots, potting media, seedlings, cuttings, garden tools (small spade), water can, water, gloves scissors, Bristol board, markers, gift paper and ribbon Poem “The Little Plant” Assessment: On-going observation Display of their products. Ticket to leave: students respond verbally to the activities they engaged in through questions by the teacher; they are given an appropriate sticker to put by their name on the progress wall chart for their responses..
