Hilde Bjørkum president EFWMF (and artistic & managing director Førde Folk music Festival, Norway) 3 20 Years of Worldwide By Patrick De Groote music festivals In 2011 the European Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals celebrates its 20th anniversary. The network started as a small club of enthusiastic festival organisers. We were all struggling to get our festival and the music we loved on the map. At that time ‘world music’ hardly existed, we were just programming unheard music from around the world, hard to get any attention for this! But times have changed and now the EFWMF has become one of the driving forces of the European and Global World Music scene. The EFWMF gathers an eclectic but adventurous group that is crucial in introducing new acts and projects for a European audience. The network has recently opened up to the rest of the world, challenging the opportunities that a true global collaboration brings. Members from Asia, the Pacific, Africa and Latin America are opening new horizons for the EFWMF. In 2010 the EFWMF made a survey of it’s member festivals. Hard to compare the micro cosmos of the highly specialised ‘La Zampogna’ festival in Italy to globally exposed festivals as Roskilde, but somehow we touch common ground, and in our meetings and exchanges we are all on equal terms, forging new collaborations and setting up exciting projects together. 4 20 Years of Worldwide music festivals So who are these festivals that call themselves the EFWMF? What do they represent? How diverse are they really? Young and Old Festivals Working at a festival Our oldest member is Roskilde (1971), followed Staff numbers vary a lot, depending on the scale of the by Sfinks Mixed (1976). Quite some festivals were festival, but in total we employ close to 400 people, born in the late ‘80ies and early ‘90ies, world music probably all working too hard for too little money. booming times. But we’re happy to see that new To compensate for this low employment figure over festival concepts also find their place in the network. 35.000 volunteers are deployed to make things work. Esperanzah! Is the youngest one (2004). Money talks, 70 million euro annual turnover 3 million people at EFWMF-festivals each year The organisation structure of the festivals is linked We might think that Europe is The Festival Continent, to its goals and local situation. Some are government and it certainly has a enormous number of festivals, organized, and depend for 100% on government Timitar (Agadir, Morocco) has by far the largest funding, some are private initiatives that are totally audience (600.000 visitors). The most intimate of our self-supporting. On average some 25% of our budget members is the Palestinian organised ‘Jerusalem’ that comes from entrance fees, 45% from public funding, gathers 650 enthousiasts. Most festival capacities are 18% from private partners and 12% from other between 20-40.000. And if we sum it all up, we come sources. The accumulated total budget of all festivals is to the astonishing figure of almost 3 million visitors… over 70 million euros. Artists? What Artists? The programming of all these festival is very varied, some specialise on specific styles and regions (Oud Festival, Afrika Festival, Gypsy Festival, …) but most of the programming mixes local (European) traditions with cultures from overseas. Some 2.000 bands are responsible for over 3.400 concerts each year. The problematic visa situation has reduced the number of artists with visa playing at our festivals, and some festivals do not ask for any visa anymore. But others still have 50% of their programming based on artists needing visa. In total over 2000 indivudual artists received visa last year to play our festivals.
